Yale TOEFL Requirements 2026: College and Graduate Rules
Yale does not publish one TOEFL minimum for every applicant. Yale College gives competitive guidance of 5 or higher on the current scale, while the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences states that it has no admission test minimum and departments may set their own.
Verified Yale requirement
Yale College: Non-native English speakers without at least two years in an English-medium school must submit an English proficiency test. Yale says its most competitive applicants typically earn 5 or higher on the current TOEFL scale or at least 100 on tests from before the January 2026 change. This is competitive guidance, not an absolute minimum.
Yale GSAS: The Graduate School does not have admission test minimums. Individual departments may set a minimum. A separate Speaking threshold applies to whether some incoming doctoral students must attend Yale's summer English program.

Yale College publishes guidance, not a cutoff
The wording on Yale's undergraduate page matters. It says the most competitive applicants typically earn 5 or higher on the current scale, or at least 100 on the prior scale. It does not call either figure a guaranteed admission threshold. An applicant who must submit an English test should treat 5 as the published reference point, while recognizing that TOEFL is only one part of the application.
The submission requirement also depends on schooling. The cited page requires a proficiency score from a non-native English speaker who has not completed two or more years at an English-medium school. Applicants should read the current wording for their own educational history.
Yale graduate rules depend on the program
Yale GSAS explicitly says it has no admission test minimum. A department can still set one, so a graduate applicant needs both the GSAS policy and the selected program's page. A program-specific number should never be relabeled as a Yale-wide graduate minimum.
GSAS also publishes a separate teaching-related Speaking threshold. Incoming doctoral students below 26 in Speaking on tests before January 21, 2026, or below 5.5 in Speaking on tests taken on or after that date, must participate in a summer English program. That is a placement and teaching rule, not a general admission floor. GSAS also states that it does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores.
| Yale context | Prior scale | Current 1-6 scale |
|---|---|---|
| Yale College competitive guidance | At least 100 | 5 or higher, officially published by Yale |
| GSAS admission minimum | None university-wide | None university-wide |
| GSAS doctoral summer-program Speaking threshold | 26 | 5.5, officially published by Yale |
Why no approximate Yale conversion is needed
Yale already publishes both scales for the undergraduate guidance and the graduate Speaking threshold. Those official pairings are stronger evidence than a general conversion table. The ETS transition table still helps explain the relationship, and the free TOEFL score converter can display it, but Yale's own wording controls this page.
Build the right Yale target
Apply T-G-R: Target, Gap, Route. A Yale College Target starts with the current 5 guidance and your test-submission status. A GSAS Target starts with the exact department's rule, then separately records the Speaking threshold if the doctoral teaching policy applies.
The Gap comes from current timed evidence, not an untimed exercise. The Route is the next task family connected to a binding requirement. The free Essentials edition of the Target Score Diagnostic Workbook helps keep admission targets, section evidence, and teaching-related thresholds in separate fields.
Yale TOEFL FAQ
Is 5.0 Yale's undergraduate minimum?
No. Yale describes 5 or higher as typical of its most competitive applicants. The page does not label it an absolute admission minimum.
Does Yale GSAS require 100?
GSAS publishes no universal admission minimum. Individual departments may publish their own scores, so 100 from one Yale program cannot be applied to every graduate application.
Is the 5.5 Speaking score an admission requirement?
It is the threshold tied to the summer English program for incoming doctoral students, not a universal GSAS admission cutoff.
