TOEFL Score Converter: New 1-6 Scale and 0-120 (2026)

Convert between the old TOEFL iBT 0-120 scale and the new 1-6 band scale introduced on January 21, 2026, and calculate your overall band from four section scores. This is an approximate planning aid: through 2028 your official ETS score report shows both scales, so always use the report itself for applications.

1. Old total score (0-120) to new band

2. New band to old score range

3. Overall band calculator (four section bands)

Your overall 2026 score is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. Ties round up (ETS example: 5.125 rounds to 5).

How the 2026 conversion works

From January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT reports each section on a 1.0 to 6.0 scale in half-band steps, and the overall score is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band. During the 2026-2028 transition, score reports also include a comparable score on the traditional 0-120 scale, so universities can read either number.

The table above follows the published transition mapping. Treat boundaries with care: a 94 and an 86 sit in the same 4.5 band, but they are different performances. If a program lists a requirement on the old scale, meet the old-scale number rather than aiming for the bottom edge of its band.

Scores taken before January 21, 2026 remain valid for two years from the test date and stay on the 0-120 scale. If you are comparing an old score with a new one, convert the old total here, then confirm what your target university actually lists.

Frequently asked questions

How should I use this converter?
It follows the published ETS transition mapping as a planning aid. Use your score report for applications.

Which scale do universities want in 2026?
During the transition most accept either, because the report shows both. Always check the program page; our TOEFL requirements pages track what specific universities list.

How is the overall band calculated?
Average the four section bands and round to the nearest half band; ties round up. Example: 5.0 + 5.0 + 4.5 + 4.5 = 19 divided by 4 = 4.75, which reports as 5.0.
