Stanford graduate admissions sets a minimum TOEFL iBT of 90 on the old 0-120 scale for admission consideration, and it is one of the first major universities to publish an official requirement on the new scale: 4.5, for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026. This page covers graduate admission; individual graduate programs may require more than the university minimum.

Stanford TOEFL requirement at a glance

Minimum TOEFL iBT (0-120): 90 for graduate admission consideration (tests taken before 21 January 2026)

New scale (1-6): 4.5, published by Stanford itself for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026. This is official, not a conversion.

Per-section minimums: none stated at the university level

Undergrad vs grad: the 90 / 4.5 floor applies to graduate study. Programs may set higher bars; for example, the Graduate School of Business asks for 100 on the old scale or 5.0 on the new scale. A score below 109 / 5.5 requires the Stanford English Placement Test after arrival.

How the requirement works on the two score scales

TOEFL iBT moved to a 1-6 banded scale in January 2026, and Stanford responded by publishing parallel requirements: 90 if your test predates the change, 4.5 if it does not. During the 2026-2028 transition every score report carries both numbers, so either version of your score can be read against Stanford's table. For reference, here is how the old totals map to the new bands under the ETS transition guidance:

Old scale (0-120) New scale (1-6), approx.
114+ 6.0
107-113 (Stanford placement-test exemption: 109 / 5.5) 5.5
95-106 5.0
86-94 (Stanford grad minimum: 90) 4.5 (official)
72-85 4.0
58-71 3.5
44-57 3.0

Stanford's official 4.5 happens to sit exactly where the ETS mapping places a 90, which makes it a clean example of how universities are translating old floors onto the new bands. To see where your own score lands, use our free TOEFL score converter.

How competitive is Stanford really?

Stanford calls 90 / 4.5 the minimum for graduate admission consideration. It separately sets 109 / 5.5 as the threshold for exemption from the English Placement Test, and individual programs may publish higher minimums. These are different rules, so use the requirement for your program rather than treating the placement-test threshold as a universal admissions target.

Use the four section scores to identify the widest gap and build checkpoints before your program's deadline. No fixed number of study weeks guarantees movement from one band to another, so leave time to reassess and, if necessary, retake.

How to prepare for a 100+ at Stanford

Run a diagnostic before you buy practice volume. One full timed test, then sort every dropped point into Task (did not recognize what the question wanted), Grammar or language (understood but produced errors), or Rhythm (timing and stamina). Whichever bucket dominates is where your next fortnight goes. Use the bucket with the most repeated errors to choose the next practice block, then verify the result with a fresh timed section. Do not infer a score gain from practice hours alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stanford accept scores on the old 0-120 scale in 2026?
Yes. Tests taken before 21 January 2026 are judged against the 90 minimum, and reports remain valid for two years. Newer tests are judged on the 1-6 scale against the 4.5 floor.

Are there per-section minimums at Stanford?
Not at the university level; the graduate floor is a total score. Individual programs can set higher or more detailed requirements, so always check your department's page.

What if my score is just below the minimum?
Below 90 / 4.5 you do not meet Stanford's published university minimum for graduate admission consideration. Check whether an exemption applies and whether your program sets a higher score; if a retake is needed, schedule it with enough margin before the deadline.
