UNSW TOEFL Requirements 2026: Scores (1–6 and 0–120)

UNSW uses course-specific old-scale requirements from 79 upward; a common profile is 90 with Writing 23 and other sections 22.

Verified requirement

  • Course-specific policy: UNSW does not use one TOEFL minimum for every degree.
  • Common 90 profile: 90 overall, with Writing 23 and Reading, Listening, and Speaking 22.
  • Lower general profile: some programs use 79 overall, with Writing 21, Reading 12, Listening 11, and Speaking 17.
  • Higher profiles: Business, Law, education, medicine, and some research programs can require 94, 96, or 102 with stronger section floors.
  • Revised format: UNSW states that the new TOEFL format is under review and not accepted until further notice. Applicants must select TOEFL for Australia; MyBest scores are not accepted.

How the requirement works on the two score scales

Requirement 0–120 scale 1–6 scale
Common 90 profile 90, W23/R22/L22/S22 About 4.5, approximate
Lower general profile 79, W21/R12/L11/S17 About 4.0, approximate
Higher course profiles 94–102 About 4.5–5.0, approximate

UNSW currently publishes requirements on the 0–120 scale and explicitly says the revised TOEFL format is under review and not accepted until further notice. Therefore, every 1–6 figure in this page is an approximate planning band rather than UNSW policy.

During the transition, old-scale results remain the practical admission target for UNSW. The free TOEFL score converter can help compare practice scores, but applicants must register for TOEFL for Australia and meet the exact faculty profile.

How competitive is UNSW really?

The required profile is an English condition, not a prediction of admission. Academic results, prerequisites, portfolios, interviews, and program capacity remain separate.

A score of 90, or about 4.5, matches a common profile used by Arts, Engineering, and several other programs. It is not universal because some programs use 79 while others require 94, 96, or 102.

Moving from about 4.0 to a stable 4.5 usually takes several weeks of targeted work. Applicants aiming at 90 should treat Writing 23 as a separate target because the required Writing floor is higher than the other three sections.

How to prepare for the course-specific 79, 90, 94, 96, or 102 at UNSW

Use Target, Gap, Route. Target means locating the exact faculty and degree profile and recording the total plus all section floors. Gap means taking a timed diagnostic and comparing each section separately.

Route most weekly practice to the largest shortfall. An Engineering applicant with 92 overall but Writing 21 still misses the common Writing floor of 23.

Keep one full mock in the weekly cycle. Count readiness only when the total and every section requirement are reached in the same sitting, because MyBest scores are not accepted.

Start with the free Essentials Edition of the Aidoss Academy Target Score Diagnostic Workbook to measure the section gap. Then use the Complete Digital Edition or the 90-Day Self-Study Planner to turn that result into a weekly route.

Classify repeated errors as comprehension, timing, response development, or language control. The classification should determine the next exercise instead of adding undirected full tests.

Use two complete checkpoints before the deadline. The first checks whether targeted practice is closing the gap. The second confirms repeatability and leaves time for official reporting.

Before registering, select TOEFL for Australia and recheck the UNSW page. The revised format is currently not accepted, so the test version matters as much as the numeric score.

Build the testing calendar backward from the application deadline. Leave enough time to receive the score, confirm every required section, and arrange official delivery rather than using the deadline as the final test date.
