Sydney TOEFL Requirements 2026: Scores (1–6 and 0–120)

Sydney’s standard requirement is 85 with section floors, about 4.0 for planning; courses may require more and the revised test is not accepted.

Verified requirement

  • Standard requirement: 85 overall, with Reading 17, Listening 17, Speaking 17, and Writing 19.
  • Approximate revised-scale planning band: about 4.0. Sydney does not publish a 1–6 requirement and currently accepts only the TOEFL Australia version reported on the 0–120 scale.
  • Course differences: some degrees require higher English levels. For example, an IELTS 7.0 course maps to 96 overall with Reading, Listening, and Speaking 23 and Writing 25.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate: the standard IELTS 6.5 profile applies broadly to both, but applicants must use the exact course page.
  • Test conditions: the Home Edition is not accepted, and scores must be less than two years old at course commencement.

How the requirement works on the two score scales

Requirement 0–120 scale 1–6 scale
Standard university profile 85, R17/L17/S17/W19 About 4.0, approximate
Higher IELTS 7.0 profile 96, R23/L23/S23/W25 About 5.0, approximate
Current accepted reporting TOEFL Australia, 0–120 No published 1–6 policy

Sydney’s official concordance table maps the standard IELTS 6.5 requirement to TOEFL iBT 85 and the individual IELTS 6.0 floor to Reading, Listening, and Speaking 17 and Writing 19. The university does not currently publish a revised 1–6 admission score.

During the 2026–2028 transition, dual reporting makes older 0–120 requirements usable, but Sydney currently specifies the TOEFL Australia version reported on the old scale. The free TOEFL score converter can support planning only; an approximate 4.0 is not Sydney policy.

How competitive is Sydney really?

The 85 standard is an English eligibility condition, not an admission forecast. Meeting it does not replace academic entry requirements, prerequisites, or course-specific selection criteria.

The standard profile is 85, or about 4.0 on the new scale. The important nuance is that 4.0 remains an approximate planning band, while some courses require 96, 105, or another higher old-scale score.

Moving from the 72–85 band toward a stable 85 can take several weeks of focused sectional work. Applicants should protect the Writing 19 floor because a qualifying total does not erase a low section.

How to prepare for an 85 or the higher course score at Sydney

Use Target, Gap, Route. Target means opening the intended Sydney course page and recording its IELTS profile, then using the official concordance table to identify the TOEFL total and section floors.

Gap means taking a timed diagnostic and comparing all four sections. An applicant with 88 overall but Writing 17 still misses the standard Writing requirement of 19.

Route most weekly practice to the weakest section while keeping one complete mock in the cycle. Count a result as ready only when the total and all required sections are reached in one sitting.

Start with the free Essentials Edition of the Aidoss Academy Target Score Diagnostic Workbook to measure the section gap. Then use the Complete Digital Edition or the 90-Day Self-Study Planner to turn that result into a weekly route.

Classify repeated errors as comprehension, timing, response development, or language control. The classification should determine the next exercise rather than simply adding another full test.

Use two complete checkpoints before the deadline. The first checks whether targeted work is closing the section gap. The second tests repeatability and leaves time for official reporting.

Before booking, confirm the accepted test version, score-validity window, and exact course requirement. Sydney currently does not accept the Home Edition or the revised 1–6 format.

Build the testing calendar backward from the application deadline. Leave enough time to receive the score, confirm every required section, and arrange official delivery rather than using the deadline as the final test date.
