University of Nevada, Las Vegas TOEFL Requirements 2026

UNLV requires TOEFL 72/17 undergraduate and 80 graduate, or an official 4.0 new-scale score with 3.5 section floors.

Verified requirement

Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT Legacy 72 overall with no band below 17. UNLV's new TOEFL iBT requirement is 4.0 overall with no band below 3.5.

Graduate: TOEFL iBT Legacy 80 overall. UNLV's new TOEFL iBT requirement is 4.0 overall with no band below 3.5. The central graduate page does not state a legacy TOEFL section floor.

Validity and reporting: Scores must be less than two years old at application. UNLV permits unofficial scores for initial review, but official scores must be sent through the testing agency for an unconditional record.

UNLV TOEFL requirements on both score scales

UNLV now publishes its own 1-to-6 TOEFL requirements, so applicants do not need to rely on an estimated conversion for the central undergraduate or graduate rules. The university labels the new score requirement as beginning in January 2026. ETS states that TOEFL iBT score reports moved to the 1-to-6 scale on January 21, 2026. That date distinction matters when you read an older score report.

Applicant type Legacy TOEFL iBT New TOEFL iBT
Undergraduate 72 overall, no band below 17 4.0 overall, no band below 3.5
Graduate 80 overall; no central legacy section floor stated 4.0 overall, no band below 3.5

ETS's transition table places 4.0 in the range that begins around 72 on the former 0-to-120 scale, but that mapping should not replace UNLV's own wording. For UNLV, the 4.0 requirement is an official university rule. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter to understand the two scales, then return to the UNLV page before you submit an application.

The section rules are especially important. An undergraduate legacy score of 72 is not enough if one section is below 17. On the new scale, both undergraduate and graduate applicants must also keep every section at 3.5 or above. The graduate legacy row is different: the central page lists 80 overall but does not list a TOEFL legacy section minimum. Do not manufacture one by converting the new section rule backward.

Undergraduate, graduate, and program-specific rules

For international undergraduate admission, the central English-proficiency page sets the 72/17 legacy profile and the 4.0/3.5 new-scale profile. UNLV also shows a separate English Language Center Fast Track route for students who meet other admission requirements but fall below the standard language threshold. That pathway has its own lower score ranges and should not be confused with the direct undergraduate minimum.

The undergraduate page also lists a specific Department of Communication Studies exception. Because a departmental exception is narrower than a university-wide rule, applicants should use it only when it applies to the exact program and should confirm it with the department. The safe default for a general undergraduate application remains the central all-colleges profile.

For graduate applicants, the Graduate College sets the central minimum at legacy 80 or new-scale 4.0 with no new-scale band below 3.5. UNLV states that each graduate program has unique admission standards, so an academic department may ask for more than the Graduate College minimum or add other evidence. Professional schools also manage portions of their admissions separately. Check the program page after confirming the central requirement.

The reviewed central undergraduate and graduate English-proficiency pages do not state a MyBest TOEFL policy or a TOEFL Home Edition policy. Absence of a statement is not permission or prohibition. If either point affects your test choice, get the current answer from UNLV before booking or sending scores.

Minimum score versus competitive admission context

A published English-proficiency minimum answers one question: whether your language evidence reaches the threshold UNLV has set for that route. It does not tell you that admission is guaranteed. Undergraduate applicants still have academic admission requirements, and graduate applicants are reviewed against Graduate College standards plus the standards of their chosen program.

UNLV's central pages reviewed for this guide do not publish an admitted-student TOEFL average or a separate university-wide "competitive" TOEFL target. Aidoss Academy therefore does not add an invented cushion such as five or ten points. If your program publishes a higher English threshold, that higher rule controls. If it does not, treat the official central minimum as the verified requirement and build a preparation margin based on your own practice stability rather than a fabricated admissions statistic.

For applicants using the new scale, section stability deserves attention because the central rule can be missed even when the overall average reaches 4.0. A learner with one section below 3.5 should prioritize that section instead of spending equal time on all four skills. This makes the study plan match the admission constraint that can actually block eligibility.

Use T-G-R to turn the UNLV rule into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. Start with the exact admissions target, compare it with one recent four-skill diagnostic, then choose the shortest route that repairs the blocking gap. This prevents a student from treating a total score as the only goal when UNLV also publishes section floors.

Worked example: imagine an undergraduate applicant targeting UNLV records practice estimates of Reading 4.0, Listening 3.5, Speaking 3.0, and Writing 4.0 on the new scale. The Target is 4.0 overall with no section below 3.5. The Gap is Speaking at 3.0. The Route is to give Speaking the first focused block while maintaining the other three skills, then run another comparable four-skill check. The benefit is concrete: the learner is working on the section that currently fails the published floor, while the next check shows whether the repair survives under mixed practice.

Keep the example diagnostic separate from official scoring. A self-study estimate is useful for routing practice, not for claiming admission eligibility. Only the score report and UNLV's current rules decide whether the requirement is met.

For a UNLV applicant who needs a structured starting point, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the live TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit includes a four-skill diagnostic and a 7-day starter plan, plus mistake-log and review tools. Those features support the T-G-R decision by helping you identify the weakest skill and turn it into a focused first-week route.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas TOEFL FAQs

What TOEFL score does UNLV require for undergraduate admission?

UNLV's central undergraduate requirement is legacy TOEFL iBT 72 overall with no band below 17, or new TOEFL iBT 4.0 overall with no band below 3.5. The university lists these as the all-colleges minimums, while also publishing a narrower departmental exception and a separate English Language Center pathway.

What TOEFL score does UNLV require for graduate admission?

UNLV's central graduate requirement is legacy TOEFL iBT 80 overall, or new TOEFL iBT 4.0 overall with no band below 3.5. The central legacy row does not list a TOEFL section floor. Individual graduate programs can have their own admission standards, so the department page must also be checked.

How old can my TOEFL score be for UNLV?

Your TOEFL score must be less than two years old when you apply to UNLV. Both central English-proficiency pages state this. UNLV allows unofficial scores for initial evaluation, but official scores must ultimately come through the testing agency if admission was based on an unofficial report.
