University of Missouri TOEFL Requirements 2026

Mizzou requires 4.5 overall with 4.0 per section for most applicants, while some colleges set higher official thresholds.

Verified requirement

Undergraduate applicants generally need TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 for the current scale. For tests taken before the university's stated transition date, the general undergraduate rule is 79 overall with no section below 17. Graduate applicants need 4.5 overall with 4.0 in every section, or 80 overall with 17 in every section on the older scale. Some colleges and programmes require more.

Mizzou TOEFL requirements on both score scales

The University of Missouri publishes current requirements on the 1-to-6 TOEFL scale and separate older-scale rules. This matters because the totals are not interchangeable by simple arithmetic. The current overall score is an average of four section bands, while the older total is the sum of four 0-to-30 section scores.

Applicant scope Current 1-6 scale Older 0-120 scale
General undergraduate 4.5 overall; 4.0 each section 79 overall; 17 each section
Graduate School minimum 4.5 overall; 4.0 each section 80 overall; 17 each section
Higher undergraduate examples Education and Journalism: 5.0 overall Education and Journalism: 100 overall

Mizzou publishes the 4.5 and 4.0 section rules directly, so these are official university thresholds rather than estimates. ETS introduced the 1-to-6 scale on January 21, 2026. Applicants comparing an older result with a current target can use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter, but the university's directly published rule always controls.

Undergraduate, graduate, and programme differences

Undergraduate admission: The general Mizzou minimum is 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. On the older scale, the published general requirement is 79 overall with no section below 17. The admissions page states a slightly different transition date for the older rule than ETS's test-scale launch date. Applicants should therefore follow the date wording on the current Mizzou admissions page when deciding which table applies to their test.

College differences: The College of Education and Human Development and the School of Journalism list 5.0 overall on the current scale. On the older scale, both list 100 overall. The School of Nursing lists 4.5 overall but requires 5.0 in Speaking, with 4.0 in the other sections. Its older rule lists 84 overall and 26 in Speaking, with 17 in the other sections. Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences follows the Journalism-level English requirement.

Graduate admission: The Graduate School publishes a central minimum of 4.5 overall and 4.0 in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The older-scale rule is 80 overall with 17 in each section. A department may require a higher score, so graduate applicants must check the programme page as well as the Graduate School page.

Graduate English scores are valid for two years beyond the test date. The Graduate School does not accept MyBest TOEFL scores and accepts regular TOEFL iBT scaled scores instead. It also states that institutional TOEFL ITP results from institutions other than the University of Missouri are not acceptable. The reviewed central pages did not provide a clear university-wide Home Edition statement, so applicants should not assume acceptance or rejection without confirming with admissions.

Minimum scores versus a practical target

A published minimum is an eligibility threshold, not evidence of a typical admitted-student score. Mizzou does not need to publish an admitted-student TOEFL average for applicants to make a sensible plan. The first task is to identify the exact college or graduate programme, then copy its total and section rules into a preparation target.

For a general undergraduate applicant, merely reaching 4.5 overall is not enough if one section is below 4.0. For a Journalism applicant, a 4.5 total also misses the stated 5.0 overall rule. For a Nursing applicant, a 4.5 overall result can still fail if Speaking is below 5.0. These examples show why a section floor should be treated as a separate condition rather than as a detail inside the total.

A reasonable practice target can sit modestly above the published floor, but it should not be presented as an admissions requirement. Build that margin around the weakest required section, not by chasing an unsupported competitive score. For comparison, applicants can review the live MIT TOEFL requirements, Stanford TOEFL requirements, and UC Berkeley TOEFL requirements without transferring another university's rule to Mizzou.

Use the Aidoss Academy T-G-R method

Target: Write the official total and every section floor. A general graduate applicant might record 4.5 overall and 4.0 in all four sections. A Nursing undergraduate would record 4.5 overall, 5.0 Speaking, and 4.0 in the other sections.

Gap: Compare the target with one recent full mock. Suppose a graduate applicant has 4.5 overall, with Reading 4.5, Listening 4.5, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.5. The total looks sufficient, but the actual gap is 0.5 in Speaking because every section must reach 4.0.

Route: Turn that single gap into a weekly plan. Use two timed Speaking sets, one recorded review, and one full-section retest each week. Label recurring problems, such as incomplete development or slow delivery, and retest the same skill after correction. This route is more useful than repeating full tests without diagnosing why one section remains below the floor.

The TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit is the verified active Aidoss Academy offer used for this plan. For Mizzou applicants who need to manage both a total and section floors, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because T-G-R separates the official target from the current gap and turns that gap into a concrete practice route.
