University of Louisville TOEFL Requirements 2026

Louisville requires TOEFL 79 on the older scale or 4.0 overall with 4.0 in every skill; some programs add their own rules.

Verified requirement

For both central undergraduate admission and the Graduate School, the University of Louisville publishes TOEFL iBT 79 for the older score scale. For the scale change effective January 21, 2026, Louisville publishes 4.0 overall with at least 4.0 in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Graduate programs may set additional requirements. Verified August 9, 2026 from the university's undergraduate admissions and Graduate School English-proficiency pages.

Louisville TOEFL requirements on both score scales

Louisville has published its own rule for the TOEFL score-scale transition, so applicants do not need to rely on an estimated conversion for the central minimum. The university states that the TOEFL change is effective January 21, 2026. Its admissions tables describe the older requirement as 79 and the new requirement as 4.0 overall with 4.0 minimum subscores in every skill. ETS independently confirms that the 1-to-6 TOEFL scale began on January 21, 2026.

Admission scope Older TOEFL iBT scale Current 1-to-6 scale
Undergraduate central requirement 79 overall 4.0 overall, minimum 4.0 in each skill
Graduate School central requirement 79 overall 4.0 overall, minimum 4.0 in each skill
Health Professions Education MS example 80 overall on its current program page No program-specific 1-to-6 number stated on the reviewed page

The important point is that Louisville's 4.0 figure is an official university requirement, not an Aidoss Academy conversion. ETS does publish comparison guidance between the older and newer scales, and the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter can help you read the two systems together. For admission, however, the university's own published rule controls.

Undergraduate, graduate, and program-specific rules

For undergraduate applicants whose English proficiency must be demonstrated by testing, Louisville publishes 79 on the older TOEFL iBT scale and 4.0 overall with 4.0 in each skill on the current scale. The undergraduate admissions page also says test scores must be official and sent directly from the testing service. Louisville's TOEFL institution code is 1838.

The Graduate School uses the same central TOEFL floor: 79 on the older scale or 4.0 overall with 4.0 in every skill on the current scale. Graduate score reports are valid for two years, and the university says a score is expired when the test was taken more than two years before the application deadline. That timing rule matters if you are applying with an older score even when the score itself meets the numerical minimum.

Program rules can be different. For example, the current Health Professions Education MS page publishes an internet-based TOEFL minimum of 80, one point above the Graduate School's older-scale central minimum of 79. That program page does not publish a specific 1-to-6 replacement in the material reviewed for this article. Applicants to that program should therefore follow the current program instructions rather than converting 80 into a binding program score on their own.

The central undergraduate and graduate pages reviewed here do not state a university-wide MyBest policy or a university-wide TOEFL Home Edition policy. That absence should not be read as acceptance or rejection. If either reporting format matters to your application, confirm the current rule with the relevant admissions office before scheduling or sending scores.

Minimum score versus competitive context

A published minimum answers a narrow question: what score meets the stated English-proficiency threshold for that admission route? It does not tell you the average TOEFL score of admitted students, and Louisville's central pages reviewed for this article do not publish admitted-student TOEFL averages that would justify inventing a so-called competitive score.

For the current scale, the section floor is especially important. A 4.0 overall score alone is not enough for the central Louisville rule if one skill is below 4.0. That makes preparation more precise: you need to protect the floor in all four sections rather than chasing only the overall average. Graduate applicants also need to check the department or program page because a program can impose an additional requirement, as the Health Professions Education example shows.

Applicants comparing U.S. university policies may also find the live requirement pages for George Mason University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas useful because both publish current-scale TOEFL rules with their own section treatment. Those pages are comparison references only. Louisville's own admissions page remains the authority for a Louisville application.

Use T-G-R to plan around the 4.0 section floor

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. For Louisville, the target is unusually easy to write down because the university has published both the overall and section requirement on the current scale. Start by writing the admission target exactly as the university states it: 4.0 overall and at least 4.0 in each of the four skills.

Worked example: imagine a diagnostic result of Reading 4.5, Listening 4.0, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.0. The learner may be close to a 4.0 overall result, but the Speaking score is still below Louisville's 4.0 section floor. The gap is therefore not “raise TOEFL generally.” It is “raise Speaking from 3.5 to at least 4.0 while maintaining the other three skills.” The route should put the first study block on the speaking task or error pattern causing that shortfall, then recheck the full four-skill profile so a gain in one section does not hide a new weakness elsewhere.

This is more useful than choosing practice by habit. A learner whose Reading is already above the floor does not need Reading to receive the same immediate attention as a Speaking score below the requirement. The target tells you what counts, the gap identifies the blocker, and the route turns that blocker into the next concrete practice decision.

For an applicant targeting Louisville's 4.0-in-every-skill requirement, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit includes a four-skill diagnostic and a 7-day starter plan, helping you identify the section blocking the requirement and turn that gap into a focused first-week route.

University of Louisville TOEFL FAQs

What TOEFL score does the University of Louisville require in 2026?

The central requirement is 79 on the older TOEFL iBT scale or 4.0 overall with at least 4.0 in every skill on the current scale. Louisville states that the score-scale change is effective January 21, 2026. Always check the exact program page as well because individual graduate programs can add requirements.

Are Louisville's undergraduate and graduate TOEFL minimums different?

At the central level, the published TOEFL minimum is the same for undergraduate and Graduate School admission. Both use 79 on the older scale and 4.0 overall with 4.0 in every skill on the current scale. Graduate programs can impose additional requirements, and graduate score reports have a stated two-year validity rule.

Does the University of Louisville accept TOEFL Home Edition or MyBest?

The reviewed central admissions pages do not state a university-wide Home Edition or MyBest policy. Do not infer acceptance or rejection from that silence. If you plan to use either format, verify the current policy directly with the undergraduate admissions office or the Graduate School and, for graduate study, the specific program.
