University of Hertfordshire TOEFL Requirements 2026

Most courses use TOEFL 4.0 for undergraduate or 4.5 for postgraduate study; Herts publishes no current central 0-120 minimum.

Verified requirement

For the majority of University of Hertfordshire courses, the current TOEFL requirement is 4.0 overall with Reading 4.0, Writing 4.0, Listening 4.0 and Speaking 4.0 for the standard undergraduate profile. The standard postgraduate profile is 4.5 overall with all four skills at least 4.0. The university states that TOEFL results are valid for two years and must remain valid until the CAS is issued. What TOEFL score does the University of Hertfordshire require?

The safest way to read Hertfordshire's current rule is to start with the university's own 1-to-6 TOEFL figures. For most undergraduate courses, the university gives a total requirement of 4.0 and requires 4.0 in every section. For most postgraduate courses, it raises the total to 4.5 while keeping the minimum for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking at 4.0.

The current central Herts admissions page does not publish a binding legacy 0-to-120 TOEFL minimum beside those figures. That matters for applicants holding an older score. ETS launched the 1-to-6 scale on 21 January 2026 and its comparison table places a 4.0 in a legacy total-score range beginning at about 72 and a 4.5 in a range beginning at about 86. Those figures are useful for understanding the scale, but they are not University of Hertfordshire admission thresholds. If your valid TOEFL was taken before the scale change, use the university's current admissions guidance or your offer conditions rather than treating an ETS comparison as a Herts rule.

Applicant profile Official Herts 1-6 rule Legacy-scale treatment
Most undergraduate courses 4.0 overall; R 4.0, L 4.0, W 4.0, S 4.0 No current central Herts 0-120 minimum published; ETS comparison only is approximate
Most postgraduate courses 4.5 overall; R 4.0, L 4.0, W 4.0, S 4.0 No current central Herts 0-120 minimum published; ETS comparison only is approximate

For a broader scale comparison, use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter. Treat any converted legacy figure as orientation only unless the university itself publishes that figure for your course.

Undergraduate, postgraduate and course-specific rules

The distinction between undergraduate and postgraduate study is important at Hertfordshire. The university says the majority of undergraduate courses use an IELTS-equivalent profile of 6.0 with no band below 5.5, and its TOEFL equivalent is 4.0 overall with all four TOEFL sections at 4.0. The majority of postgraduate courses use the IELTS-equivalent 6.5 profile, which Herts maps to TOEFL 4.5 overall with every section at least 4.0.

Do not assume those two profiles cover every degree. Herts explicitly lists groups of courses with higher English requirements. Examples include postgraduate Business courses, Nursing, Social Work, many Health and Emergency Professions courses, and several named science and psychology programmes at the IELTS 6.5 level. Other programmes are listed at IELTS 7.0 or 7.5. The central page does not provide a TOEFL number beside every higher IELTS profile, so it would be unsafe to manufacture one.

Medicine shows why course-level checking matters. The MBBS international entry page requires IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in all components and says TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Paper are acceptable tests, but the page reviewed for this guide does not state a numeric TOEFL equivalent. An MBBS applicant should therefore follow the programme's own English-language instructions rather than borrowing the standard undergraduate TOEFL 4.0 profile.

The same caution applies to test format. Hertfordshire's central page lists several accepted online English tests, but it does not explicitly state a central TOEFL Home Edition policy or a MyBest policy in the material reviewed here. Absence of a statement is not permission or rejection. If either issue affects your application, confirm it with the university before relying on the score.

Minimum score versus a practical target

A published minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a claim about the scores of admitted students. Hertfordshire does not need to publish an admitted-student TOEFL average for you to plan sensibly. Your first task is to meet the exact profile attached to your course, including every section floor. A 4.5 overall score does not solve an undergraduate application if one required section is below 4.0.

Build a small buffer only after the minimum is secure. For example, if your postgraduate course uses the standard 4.5 overall and 4.0-in-each-skill profile, a sensible practice target is one that repeatedly clears all five conditions in full mock work. That is a preparation target, not a prediction about admission. Your offer and course page remain the authority.

Also plan around score validity. Herts states that IELTS, PTE and TOEFL tests are valid for two years and must still be valid when the CAS is issued. A score that expires before that stage can create a timing problem even if it was high enough when you first planned your application.

Use T-G-R to turn the requirement into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method is useful when a university publishes both an overall score and section floors. Start with Target: copy the exact requirement from the course and admissions pages. Then identify the Gap: compare that target with your latest full practice result section by section. Finally choose the Route: put the weakest required section first in your next study block while keeping the other sections above their floors.

Worked example: suppose a standard undergraduate applicant records an overall 4.0 in practice, with Reading 4.0, Listening 4.0, Writing 4.5 and Speaking 3.5. The overall figure looks sufficient, but the Herts profile is not yet met because Speaking is below 4.0. The Target is 4.0 in every skill, the Gap is Speaking, and the Route is a focused Speaking block followed by another complete timed check. This prevents a strong Writing score from hiding the section that can still block the requirement.

If you want a structured starting point, the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit includes a quick diagnostic, a seven-day starter plan, and guided practice across Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. For a University of Hertfordshire applicant who needs to identify a weak section before building a study route, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the Starter Kit combines four-skill guided practice with a diagnostic and focused first-week plan.

University of Hertfordshire TOEFL FAQs

What is the standard undergraduate TOEFL requirement at Hertfordshire?

The standard current requirement for most undergraduate courses is TOEFL 4.0 overall with 4.0 in Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Check the exact course page because Herts identifies several programmes with higher English requirements.

What is the standard postgraduate TOEFL requirement at Hertfordshire?

The standard current requirement for most postgraduate courses is TOEFL 4.5 overall with every section at least 4.0. Some postgraduate subjects and individual degrees have higher English-language requirements, so the programme page and offer conditions take priority.

How long is a TOEFL score valid for a Hertfordshire application?

Hertfordshire states that TOEFL results are valid for two years and must remain valid up to the date the CAS is issued. Applicants close to the expiry date should account for the CAS timeline rather than checking validity only on the application submission date.
