University of Salford TOEFL requirements on both score scales

Salford has already published a TOEFL rule for the 2026 score-scale change. That matters because applicants do not need to rely on a generic conversion for the university's common English-language level. For tests from 21 January 2026, Salford requires 4.5 overall and at least 4.0 in each of Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. For tests taken on or before 20 January 2026, the requirement is 79 overall with separate section floors.

Test date Overall Section minimums
From 21 Jan 2026 4.5 4.0 in every section
On or before 20 Jan 2026 79 L17, R18, W17, S20

ETS introduced the 1-to-6 TOEFL iBT scale on 21 January 2026. ETS's institutional guidance lists common recommended relationships such as 80 to 4.0 and 90 to 4.5, but Salford's own published requirement is more important here because it explicitly sets 4.5 for the common profile. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter for planning across scales, but treat Salford's stated rule as the admissions standard.

Undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and research rules differ

Salford says English-language requirements are shown on individual course pages. As a general guide, undergraduate courses require IELTS Academic 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each component or an accepted equivalent. Postgraduate taught courses generally use the same IELTS 6.0 and 5.5-per-component profile. The university's worldwide equivalent-qualification list then publishes the TOEFL 79 or 4.5 profile above. This makes that TOEFL rule defensible for the common undergraduate and postgraduate taught level, subject to the applicant's course page.

Postgraduate research is different. Salford's central page generally requires IELTS Academic 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component for research courses. Research courses based in Salford Business School generally require IELTS Academic 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each component. The same central page does not publish higher TOEFL numbers tied to those research profiles. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to convert the research IELTS levels into a binding TOEFL minimum. A research applicant should check the exact programme and obtain confirmation of the accepted TOEFL profile before treating a number as sufficient.

There is also a test-mode restriction: Salford explicitly says the TOEFL Home Edition is not accepted. The reviewed central page does not state a MyBest policy, a separate TOEFL score-validity period, or a TOEFL reporting code. Absence of those statements should not be turned into an assumption. Follow the current application instructions and course page for reporting details.

Minimum score versus a sensible preparation target

A published minimum answers one admissions question: whether a score can satisfy the stated English-language threshold for the relevant course. It does not tell you the score distribution of admitted students, and Salford's public page does not provide admitted-student TOEFL averages that would justify inventing a so-called competitive score. For that reason, this guide does not add an unsupported target above 4.5 or 79.

The section floors matter just as much as the total. On the current scale, a 4.5 overall score is not enough if one section is below 4.0. On the older scale, a 79 total does not satisfy the stated profile if Listening is below 17, Reading below 18, Writing below 17, or Speaking below 20. Preparation should therefore be based on the weakest required section rather than only on the overall score.

For additional institution-specific examples, see the Aidoss Academy requirement pages for University of Bradford, University of Iceland, and University of Mannheim. These pages provide additional context, but Salford's own current policy controls a Salford application.

Use T-G-R to turn Salford's requirement into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. Start with the exact admission target, compare it with a recent four-skill baseline, then choose the route from the largest meaningful gap. This is especially useful for Salford because the university publishes section minimums. A student should not spend the same amount of time on all four skills when only one section is below the required floor.

Worked example
Suppose an applicant testing on the current scale has a practice profile of Reading 4.5, Listening 4.0, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.5. Target: Salford's common profile requires 4.5 overall and every section at 4.0 or above. Gap: Speaking is the immediate admissions-floor gap. Route: make Speaking the first repair priority while maintaining the other three sections. After a focused practice cycle, retest under comparable conditions and update the route from new evidence. This keeps the plan tied to the requirement rather than to a vague total-score goal.

For University of Salford applicants, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit provides a four-skill diagnostic route and a structured seven-day first-week plan, helping learners identify a weak skill and turn it into a specific starting action.

University of Salford TOEFL FAQs

What TOEFL score does the University of Salford require in 2026?

For Salford's common undergraduate and postgraduate taught profile, tests from 21 January 2026 require 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. Tests taken on or before 20 January 2026 require 79 overall with Listening 17, Reading 18, Writing 17, and Speaking 20. Some courses require a higher English level, so always check the programme page.

Does the University of Salford accept TOEFL Home Edition?

No. Salford's current English-language requirements page explicitly states that it does not accept the TOEFL Home Edition. Applicants should use an accepted TOEFL testing mode and recheck the university page before booking because testing policies can change.

Is 4.5 enough for every University of Salford programme?

No. The 4.5 profile is not a promise that every Salford programme uses the same threshold. Salford tells applicants to check individual course requirements, and its central guidance sets higher English levels for postgraduate research, especially research courses based in Salford Business School. The central page does not publish corresponding higher TOEFL numbers for those research profiles, so applicants should not infer them.
