Qatar University TOEFL Requirements 2026

TOEFL iBT 61 exempts eligible undergraduates from Foundation English; graduate requirements are programme-specific, with no central minimum.

Verified requirement

For undergraduate applicants to specified science, education, engineering, health, medicine, and pharmacy routes, Qatar University lists TOEFL iBT 61 as the English score for exemption from its Foundation Program. Graduate applicants must follow the score stated by their intended programme. International graduate applicants from outside Qatar are instructed to submit IELTS Academic rather than TOEFL. Qatar University TOEFL requirements on both score scales

Qatar University does not publish one TOEFL minimum that applies to every applicant. The clearest central undergraduate figure is 61 on the older 0-120 TOEFL iBT scale. That score is used as an English competency threshold for exemption from Foundation English in specified colleges. It should not be described as a universal admission minimum for every Qatar University bachelor’s degree.

Qatar University has not published a central 1-6 TOEFL requirement for this undergraduate exemption. ETS introduced the 1-6 scale on January 21, 2026. Its institutional guidance places an older requirement of 70 near 3.5 and an older requirement of 80 near 4.0. Because 61 falls below those standard examples, applicants should not invent a precise Qatar University band. Use the university’s stated 61 rule and ask admissions how a score report issued after January 21, 2026 will be evaluated. The Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter can help with approximate planning, but it does not replace an official university decision.

Applicant scope Older scale 1-6 treatment
Specified undergraduate colleges 61 for Foundation English exemption No central QU band published
Graduate programmes requiring English Programme-specific, often 45, 61, or 68 in published examples No university-wide band published
International graduate applicants outside Qatar TOEFL is not the instructed submission route Submit IELTS Academic as directed

Undergraduate, graduate, and programme differences

Undergraduate applicants: The 61 threshold applies to the English competency component for students entering designated colleges, including the science track in Arts and Sciences, selected secondary education concentrations, Engineering, Health Sciences, Medicine, and Pharmacy. Meeting 61 can exempt an eligible student from Foundation English. Other admission conditions, mathematics competency requirements, academic qualifications, and college selection rules still apply.

Graduate applicants: Qatar University states that applicants to programmes requiring English competency must achieve the score required by the intended programme. There is no defensible university-wide graduate TOEFL number. Published programme examples vary. The Diploma in Secondary Education English concentration lists 45, while several graduate programmes list 68. A PhD in Engineering example also lists 68 and requires the result to have been taken within two years of the intended semester.

International graduate applicants: Qatar University’s central graduate test page adds an important restriction. Students applying from outside Qatar are requested to submit IELTS Academic at the score required by the programme. An international applicant should therefore not assume that a qualifying TOEFL score will be accepted simply because a programme page mentions TOEFL.

The graduate reporting code shown on programme pages is 8943. Qatar University also states centrally that English test scores are no longer valid when they are more than two years old at the start of the intended admission semester. The reviewed central pages did not provide a clear university-wide rule for TOEFL Home Edition or MyBest scores, so applicants should obtain written confirmation before relying on either.

Minimum score versus competitive context

A published minimum answers only one question: whether a score can satisfy a stated language condition. It does not show the score profile of admitted students, predict admission, or override programme capacity and academic review. Qatar University does not publish central admitted-student TOEFL averages that would support a claim that a particular score is competitive.

For an eligible undergraduate, 61 should be treated as the verified Foundation English exemption threshold, not as a guaranteed admission score. For a graduate applicant, the correct target is the exact figure on the programme page. When the programme lists 68, planning around 61 would leave the application below the stated rule. When the programme requires IELTS from an international applicant outside Qatar, TOEFL preparation alone does not resolve the submission requirement.

A sensible planning margin can reduce the risk that one weak section or an imperfect test day leaves the applicant below the required total. That margin is a personal preparation target, not an unofficial Qatar University admissions standard.

Use the Aidoss Academy T-G-R method

Use T-G-R: Target, Gap, Route. First, write the rule that applies to your exact degree. Second, compare it with a recent full-length result. Third, assign a specific route to the largest gap instead of studying every skill equally.

Worked example: An undergraduate applicant to Engineering confirms that 61 is the relevant Foundation English exemption score and records a recent comparable older-scale result of 54. The seven-point total gap is not yet a study plan. The learner checks section performance and finds that Listening and Writing account for most missed points. The route becomes four focused sessions each week: two Listening sessions built around note selection and answer evidence, and two Writing sessions built around sentence control and revision. A full mock every seven days checks whether the targeted work transfers to the total score.

For a graduate programme listing 68, the same method starts with 68, not the undergraduate 61. If the applicant is outside Qatar and the programme directs international students to IELTS Academic, the target step must reflect that submission rule before any TOEFL route is chosen.

Preparation option: The TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit is the verified active Aidoss Academy starting product for learners building a 2026 study route. For applicants who need a target-first plan and practice aligned with the current test year, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because it provides a structured T-G-R process and keeps university rules separate from approximate score-scale planning.
