Princeton TOEFL Requirements 2026: No Graduate School Minimum
Princeton's Graduate School may require TOEFL scores from applicants who do not qualify for an exemption, but it does not publish a university-wide minimum TOEFL score for submitting a graduate application. Departments can set their own requirements.
Verified Princeton Graduate School policy
Princeton Graduate School accepts the TOEFL iBT at a test centre or at home. It says English-language proficiency testing is required for many applicants, but it does not set a minimum score to submit an application. Applicants must check their intended department for any additional requirement. The school does not accept MyBest scores and considers the highest score from each section when multiple official reports are received.

What Princeton's rule does and does not say
The useful answer is not a made-up target number. For graduate admission, Princeton's central policy requires evidence of English proficiency from applicants who do not meet an exemption, while leaving any application minimum to the department. A score can therefore be required even though the Graduate School has no published university-wide cutoff. The current official page confirms that no university-wide numerical minimum is stated.
The policy lists exemptions for applicants whose primary language is English, whose entire undergraduate instruction was in English, or whose qualifying full-time graduate study was taught entirely in English. Read the exact wording before deciding that an exemption applies. If it does not, submit the accepted test result and then check the Fields of Study page and the department's own admissions page. A number shown by one Princeton program is not automatically a rule for every program.
| Policy item | What Princeton publishes |
|---|---|
| Graduate application total score | No Graduate School-wide TOEFL minimum on either score scale |
| Department requirement | May be higher or more specific; verify with the intended department |
| Additional assessment after admission | Speaking below 27 on the prior 0-30 section scale requires an assessment on enrolment; this is not an admission cutoff |
How the 1-6 TOEFL scale fits this policy
TOEFL score reports changed to the 1-6 scale in half-point steps on January 21, 2026. ETS provides comparison information between the earlier 0-120 total scale and the current format, including planning examples such as 90 and 4.5, or 100 and 5. Princeton has not published a Graduate School admission cutoff in either format. Those comparisons are therefore for interpreting reports, not Princeton requirements.
Use the free TOEFL score converter to read old and current reports side by side, then take the department's stated rule as controlling. Do not convert the Graduate School's Speaking-below-27 placement trigger into an unofficial 1-6 admission requirement. It is a separate post-enrolment assessment condition, not an application minimum.
Minimum, department rule, and competitiveness
Where no central numeric minimum exists, it is tempting to choose a score that sounds “safe.” That would not be evidence-based. First find the requirement for your department and degree. If the department gives no number, focus on submitting a valid official score by its deadline and on showing the English skills required for your proposed study. Princeton says score reports should be sent no later than three weeks before the application deadline, and that no offer can be made if required scores are missing from the file.
A result that meets a stated department rule is an eligibility check, not an admission forecast. Academic preparation, research fit, recommendations, and the department's selection process remain separate. Applicants should also note Princeton's Fall 2026 validity rule: a test score must still be valid when the application opens. Recheck both the university and department instructions near submission because those details can change.
A focused preparation step
Use C-A-R-R for the skill your department emphasizes: Capture one timed response, Analyze one clear weakness, Repair it with a specific revision, then Retest after one, three, seven, and fourteen days. If speaking is your weak point, make the captured task a spoken response and keep the recording. This creates a usable record of clarity, organization, and control instead of relying on a general feeling about readiness.
The TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit gives a free structure for selecting current-format tasks, keeping an error record, and turning a department target into a short study plan. Use it after you have confirmed whether Princeton requires a score for you and whether your department has its own threshold.
Princeton TOEFL FAQ
Does Princeton Graduate School have a TOEFL minimum score?
No. Its central page says there is no minimum score requirement to submit a graduate application. A department may still have its own rule.
Is a Speaking score below 27 an admissions rejection threshold?
No. Princeton describes that prior-scale section score as a trigger for an English-language assessment after enrolment, not as a Graduate School admission minimum.
Can I use the 1-6 scale as Princeton's official minimum?
No. Princeton does not state a central graduate cutoff on the 1-6 scale. Use the score format shown on your report and follow the current rule published by your intended department.
