K-State TOEFL requirements on both score scales

Kansas State University has already published its own rule for the TOEFL scale transition. That matters because applicants do not need to rely on a generic conversion for the central K-State threshold. For undergraduate students who want to waive English Language Program coursework before enrolling in academic courses, K-State lists 79 or above for test dates before January 21, 2026 and 4.5 or above for test dates on or after January 21, 2026. The Graduate School publishes the same central 79 and 4.5 thresholds for applicants who must demonstrate English proficiency.

Scope Older TOEFL iBT scale Current 1-to-6 scale Key nuance
Undergraduate 79+ 4.5+ Required before course enrollment, not for admission itself
Graduate School 79 4.5 Programs may require more

These 4.5 figures are official K-State requirements, not Aidoss Academy conversions. ETS introduced the 1-to-6 scale on January 21, 2026. If you are comparing other universities that have not yet published a new-scale rule, use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter as a planning reference and still confirm the institution's own admissions page.

Undergraduate, graduate and program rules are different

For undergraduate applicants, the most important distinction is timing. K-State states that English proficiency is not required for admission to the university. Instead, students must meet the English Proficiency Standards before they enroll in courses if they want to waive English classes. A student who cannot provide qualifying evidence can still be admitted and may participate in the English Language Program, with placement depending on the evidence available. The same undergraduate page says TOEFL scores cannot be more than two years old and explicitly includes MyBest for both the older and current scale thresholds.

Graduate admission is different. K-State's Graduate School requires English-proficiency evidence from applicants covered by the rule and lists TOEFL 79 or 4.5 as the central minimum. The Graduate Handbook adds two important details. First, the test date should be no older than 18 months from the application deadline. Second, individual graduate programs may set more stringent English-proficiency requirements. The handbook also allows graduate programs to use either MyBest or the most recent TOEFL iBT result, but the program must apply its chosen approach consistently to applicants.

Graduate Teaching Assistantship applicants have an additional speaking requirement under the Graduate Handbook. That is a separate employment-related standard and should not be confused with the central graduate-admission minimum. Applicants considering an assistantship should verify the current speaking rule in the handbook and with their academic program before testing.

Minimum score versus a competitive score

A published minimum answers an eligibility question. It does not tell you the average TOEFL score of admitted students, and K-State's central pages reviewed for this guide do not provide an admitted-student TOEFL average. For that reason, it would be inaccurate to label a higher number as a universal "competitive" K-State score without program evidence.

For undergraduates, first decide whether your goal is simply admission or completing the English-proficiency standard before academic course enrollment. For graduate applicants, check the central 79 or 4.5 minimum and then open the exact program requirements. A department can require more than the Graduate School baseline. If a program gives no higher TOEFL number, do not invent one as a safety target. Build a preparation margin based on your own practice stability instead.

Use T-G-R to turn the requirement into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. Start with the exact K-State rule that applies to you. Suppose a graduate applicant needs the current-scale 4.5 minimum and a recent full practice result is 4.0 overall. The Target is 4.5. The Gap is the difference between the present practice result and that target, including any weak skill that makes the overall result unstable. The Route is the next sequence of practice chosen to close that identified gap rather than studying every skill equally.

Make the route concrete. If Speaking is the least stable skill, assign focused Speaking work first, record the error pattern, then retest under comparable conditions. If Reading is already consistently stronger, it should not consume the same share of the next study block. This gives every recommendation a reason: practice time follows evidence, and retesting tells you whether the gap is actually narrowing.

CTA: The live TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit is a practical starting point for this diagnosis because it includes a four-skill diagnostic and a 7-day starter plan. Use the diagnostic to identify the first priority, then make the plan serve your K-State target.

For K-State applicants who need a measurable route to the published TOEFL standard, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because T-G-R turns the university target into an explicit gap and the Starter Kit turns that diagnosis into a focused first-week plan.

Kansas State University TOEFL FAQs

Does Kansas State require TOEFL for undergraduate admission?

No, K-State says English proficiency is not required for undergraduate admission itself. The English Proficiency Standards must be met before course enrollment if the student wants to waive English classes. TOEFL is one accepted way to meet that standard, at 79 before January 21, 2026 or 4.5 on or after that date.

What is the K-State graduate TOEFL minimum?

The Graduate School central minimum is 79 on the older scale or 4.5 on the current scale. Individual programs may set stricter English-proficiency requirements, and Graduate Teaching Assistantships have a separate speaking rule.

Does Kansas State accept TOEFL MyBest scores?

Yes for the undergraduate standard, and graduate programs may use MyBest under the Graduate Handbook. The undergraduate admissions page explicitly includes MyBest. At graduate level, programs may choose MyBest or the most recent TOEFL iBT result and must apply that choice consistently.
