Concordia University TOEFL Requirements 2026

Concordia requires TOEFL 70 for undergraduate entry; graduate thresholds vary by faculty, with official 2026 1-to-6 rules.

Verified requirement
Undergraduate applicants who must prove English proficiency can meet Concordia's central TOEFL minimum with iBT 70. For tests taken in January 2026 or later, Concordia publishes 4.0 overall with no section below 3.5. Graduate requirements are faculty-specific. Arts and Science and Fine Arts commonly use 86 with at least 20 in every section for admission without English courses, or 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 on the new scale. Other faculties use different thresholds. Source: Concordia University. Last verified: August 9, 2026.

Concordia TOEFL requirements on both score scales

Concordia already publishes its own requirements on the current TOEFL 1-to-6 scale, so these new-scale figures are official university rules rather than Aidoss Academy estimates. ETS introduced the 1-to-6 scale on January 21, 2026. During the transition, score reports also include a comparable 0-to-120 overall score. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter for planning, but use Concordia's stated threshold when deciding whether you meet admission requirements.

Scope Older TOEFL scale Current 1-to-6 rule
Undergraduate central minimum 70 overall 4.0 overall, no section below 3.5
Graduate Arts and Science / Fine Arts, common no-course profile 86 overall, at least 20 in each section 4.5 overall, no section below 4.0
Graduate Gina Cody School, common no-course profile 85 overall, at least 20 in each section 4.5 overall, no section below 4.0
Graduate John Molson School of Business 90 overall, at least 20 in each section 4.5 overall, no section below 4.0

The undergraduate page also states that TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is accepted, MyBest Scores are accepted, and applicants should use institution code 0956.00. Undergraduate test results must be less than two years old at the time of application. Concordia's graduate page likewise lists the Special Home Edition and MyBest Scores for the TOEFL profiles it publishes.

Undergraduate, graduate and program-specific rules are different

For undergraduate admission, 70 is the central minimum for applicants who must submit an English proficiency test. That number is not a universal target for every degree. Concordia explicitly lists undergraduate programs that require higher English scores. For example, the English and History BA page publishes TOEFL 100 with Writing 22 as an additional English proficiency requirement. A student applying to one of these programs should follow the program page rather than assume that the central 70 is sufficient.

Graduate admission is even more segmented. The School of Graduate Studies organizes English requirements by faculty. Arts and Science and Fine Arts commonly use 86 with 20 in each component for admission without English courses, while the current-scale profile is 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. Some programs inside those faculties are higher. Communication Studies, for example, publishes 106 on the older scale and 5.5 overall with no section below 5.0 on the current scale.

The Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science has a common no-course profile of 85 with 20 in each section, or 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. Its Aerospace MEng is higher at 88 with no component below 22, or 4.5 in all bands. John Molson School of Business publishes 90 with no part under 20, or 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. These distinctions are why a graduate applicant should verify the exact faculty and program before setting a study target.

Minimum score versus a sensible preparation target

An admissions minimum is a threshold, not a statement about the typical score of admitted students. Concordia does not publish admitted-student TOEFL averages on the central pages reviewed for this article, so there is no defensible reason to invent a so-called competitive score. The useful planning question is whether your target has enough room for the exact overall and section rules that apply to your program.

For an undergraduate applicant subject only to the central rule, that means watching the 4.0 overall requirement and the 3.5 section floor together. For many graduate applicants, a strong overall score cannot compensate for a section below the faculty floor. A student aiming at Arts and Science, for example, needs to plan around both the 4.5 overall result and the 4.0 minimum in every section. If a named program sets a higher profile, that program rule becomes the real target.

Use T-G-R to turn the Concordia rule into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. First, write the exact Concordia target that applies to your application. Second, compare it with your latest full TOEFL result and section scores. Third, build the next study block around the largest admission-relevant gap rather than distributing time equally across all four skills.

Worked example: suppose a graduate Arts and Science applicant has a current-scale result of 4.5 overall with Reading 4.5, Listening 4.5, Speaking 5.0 and Writing 3.5. The overall score looks close to the published no-course profile, but Writing is below the 4.0 section floor. Under T-G-R, the Target is 4.5 overall with every section at 4.0 or higher. The Gap is Writing. The Route gives Writing the first practice priority while the student maintains the other sections. This keeps the plan tied to the actual admissions rule.

For Concordia applicants who need a structured first week, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit includes a four-skill diagnostic and a 7-day route that helps identify the weakest skill before choosing what to practice first.
