University of Technology Sydney TOEFL Requirements 2026
UTS publishes both 0-120 and 1-6 TOEFL requirements, but the correct target depends on the exact undergraduate, postgraduate coursework, or research course. Most courses use 79 overall with Writing 21, or 4.0 overall with Writing 4.5, while teaching, health, psychology, business, law, and selected research programs may require substantially higher results.
Requirement check: July 25, 2026
For most UTS courses, the minimum is TOEFL iBT 79 overall with Writing 21 on the 0-120 scale, or 4.0 overall with Writing 4.5 on the 1-6 scale. Several named courses use higher profiles. Confirm the exact course in the official UTS English language requirements.
The standard UTS TOEFL requirement
UTS states that every course has an English language requirement. For the large group described as all other undergraduate courses and all other postgraduate coursework courses, the TOEFL minimum is 79 overall with Writing 21 on the 0-120 scale. On the current scale, the same UTS profile is 4.0 overall with Writing 4.5. UTS publishes these values directly, so they are official UTS thresholds rather than an Aidoss Academy conversion.
| Applicant group | 0-120 requirement | 1-6 requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Most undergraduate courses | 79 overall, Writing 21 | 4.0 overall, Writing 4.5 |
| Most postgraduate coursework courses | 79 overall, Writing 21 | 4.0 overall, Writing 4.5 |
| Engineering, IT, Science, and Design research | 79 overall, Writing 21 | 4.0 overall, Writing 4.5 |
| Many other research fields | 94 overall, Writing 27 | 4.5 overall, Writing 5.5 |
The TOEFL changed to a 1-6 scale on January 21, 2026. ETS reports overall and section scores in half-point increments and also supplies a comparable 0-120 overall score during a two-year transition. UTS has already published its own 1-6 thresholds. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter to understand the two scales, but follow the exact UTS row for your course.
Undergraduate differences
Most undergraduate courses use the standard 79 and 21 profile, or 4.0 and 4.5. Nursing, Midwifery, and Psychological Science Honours require 94 overall, with section minimums of Speaking 23, Listening 24, Reading 24, and Writing 24 on the older scale. UTS publishes the current-scale profile as 4.5 overall, Speaking 4.5, Listening 5.0, Reading 5.0, and Writing 5.0.
Combined teaching degrees use a still higher profile. The official page lists totals in the 102-109 range with Speaking 26, Listening 28, Reading 24, and Writing 27. For any combined degree, UTS applies the higher English requirement of the two component courses. This is why a general 79 target can be insufficient even when it is the most common minimum.
Postgraduate coursework and research differences
Most postgraduate coursework programs also use 79 overall with Writing 21, or 4.0 overall with Writing 4.5. Higher examples include Executive MBA and the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Strategy at 94 overall with Writing 24, or 4.5 overall with Writing 5.0. Pharmacy, Clinical Psychology, Physiotherapy, and selected advanced health courses require 94 plus section floors. Genetic Counselling requires 98 overall, with Speaking 23, Listening 24, Reading 24, and Writing 27, or 5.0 overall with current-scale section requirements.
Research requirements divide by discipline. Design, Architecture and Building, Engineering, Information Technology, and Science research courses use the standard 79 and Writing 21 profile. Many Business, Health, Communication, Education, International Studies, Law, Sustainable Futures, and Data Science research courses require 94 overall with Writing 27, or 4.5 overall with Writing 5.5. The Master of Business by Research has a separate Writing requirement of 24 or 5.0.
Home Edition, score age, MyBest, and reporting
UTS generally accepts TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition when the test was taken within two years before the application. The official page names exceptions. Speech Pathology, Genetic Counselling, and Orthoptics exclude the Home Edition, so applicants to those courses need an accepted test-centre result. UTS does not publish a central MyBest policy on the reviewed requirements page. Do not assume superscoring is accepted without written confirmation from UTS.
Official TOEFL score reports must be sent directly to UTS. The university's TOEFL institution code is 0743. Test results are recognised when obtained less than two years before the application date, not simply two years before enrolment.
Minimum versus a practical target
A published minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a promise of admission. UTS states that course requirements differ and that applicants must also check special requirements. First identify the exact course code and its English profile. Then build a preparation target that leaves room above every required component, especially Writing. An overall result above the minimum cannot repair a section score below a stated floor.
A genuine Aidoss method step: P-R-E-C-I-S-E
Use the Remove unnecessary words step from P-R-E-C-I-S-E when revising a TOEFL Writing response. Consider: “In my personal opinion, I believe that universities should provide students with more quiet study spaces because of the fact that these spaces help them to concentrate better.” A controlled revision is: “Universities should provide more quiet study spaces because they help students concentrate.” The main claim and reason remain, but repeated framing and heavy phrasing disappear. This makes the relationship between the ideas easier to follow and reduces avoidable grammar risk.
Prepare with a verified target: Aidoss Academy's A Book to Score in TOEFL covers all four sections in a 371-page teacher-led guide with worked examples plus screen and printable formats. Start with the free Essentials Edition or use the free TOEFL readiness check to identify the section that needs the most focused work before choosing a study route.
Frequently asked questions
What is the usual UTS TOEFL minimum?
For most undergraduate and postgraduate coursework courses, it is 79 overall with Writing 21, or 4.0 overall with Writing 4.5. Named programs may require higher totals and section scores.
Does UTS accept the TOEFL Home Edition?
Generally yes, but not for every program. Speech Pathology, Genetic Counselling, and Orthoptics are among the courses whose published TOEFL rows exclude the Home Edition.
How long are TOEFL results valid for UTS?
UTS recognises English test scores obtained less than two years before the applicant applies. Arrange direct official reporting using institution code 0743.
Can a high overall score offset a low Writing score?
No. Where UTS publishes a Writing or other section minimum, the applicant must meet both the overall requirement and the section floor.
