University of Sussex TOEFL Requirements 2026

Sussex requires TOEFL 80, 88, or 95 before 21 January 2026, or 4.0, 4.5, or 5.0 after that date, depending on the course.

Verified requirement

University of Sussex uses three English levels: Standard, High, and Advanced. For TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026, the minimums are 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 respectively, with section minimums. For earlier tests, the corresponding official requirements are 80, 88, and 95. Source: University of Sussex. Last verified: 3 August 2026.

Sussex TOEFL requirements on both score scales

The correct minimum depends on the English level assigned to your course. Sussex does not publish one score that applies to every undergraduate, taught postgraduate, or research degree. Applicants should first open the specific course page and identify whether it uses the Standard, High, or Advanced level.

Sussex level Before 21 Jan 2026 From 21 Jan 2026
Standard 80 overall; L17, R18, S20, W17 4.0 overall; 4.0 in every section
High 88 overall; L20, R19, S21, W23 4.5 overall; 4.0 in every section
Advanced 95 overall; L22, R23, S23, W24 5.0 overall; 4.5 in every section

These are university-published rules, not approximate conversions. The new TOEFL scale began on 21 January 2026. ETS states that the 1-to-6 total is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter to understand the two scales, but use the Sussex table above for the actual admission threshold.

Undergraduate, postgraduate, and program rules

Sussex publishes the same three-level framework for international undergraduate and Masters applicants. What changes is the level attached to the individual course. A course with Standard English uses 80 on the older scale or 4.0 on the new scale. A High course uses 88 or 4.5. An Advanced course uses 95 or 5.0.

Program differences are material. For example, some language-intensive, professional, or teacher-training courses use High or Advanced English rather than the Standard level. Research degrees can also carry a course-specific level. Therefore, a score of 80 or 4.0 can be sufficient for one Sussex degree but insufficient for another. The course page and the admissions English-language page should be read together.

Sussex accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. TOEFL results are valid for two years from the test date and must remain valid when the student begins the Sussex course. Scores from separate test sittings cannot be combined, so applicants should not rely on MyBest-style section combinations to satisfy the published minimums. The University of Sussex institution code for score reporting is 9166.

The university also notes that satisfying English proficiency does not replace academic, subject, visa, or other course conditions. International students should check the complete offer and any UK immigration evidence requirements separately.

Minimum score versus a sensible preparation target

The published number is an eligibility threshold, not evidence about the average score of admitted students. Sussex does not provide a university-wide admitted-student TOEFL average on these pages, so it would be inaccurate to invent a competitive score. Your practical target should instead reflect the exact overall and section minimums for your course.

A total above the minimum does not repair a section below the required floor. For a High-level course on the new scale, an overall 4.5 with a 3.5 section would still miss the stated requirement of at least 4.0 in every section. For an Advanced course, each section must reach 4.5 even though the overall requirement is 5.0. This is why preparation should track four section results, not only the total.

A reasonable planning buffer is a personal risk-management choice, not an additional Sussex rule. Students who are near a section cutoff may choose to continue practising until repeated timed work stays above that cutoff. The official minimum remains the number on the relevant Sussex course and admissions pages.

Use T-G-R to turn the Sussex rule into a study route

Aidoss Academy's T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. Start with the exact Sussex level for your course. Then compare every current section score with its required floor. Finally, assign practice according to the largest verified gap rather than dividing time equally.

Worked example: A student applying to a High-level course needs 4.5 overall and at least 4.0 in each section. A diagnostic gives Reading 4.5, Listening 4.0, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.0. The target is clear. The immediate gap is Speaking, which is 0.5 below the section minimum. The route should prioritise timed speaking responses, recorded review, and repeat attempts while maintaining the other sections. The student should retest under timed conditions rather than assuming that a stronger Reading result compensates for Speaking.

Record one measurable action for each week, such as four timed speaking sets, two full Listening sections, and one complete mock. Review whether the weakest section is moving above the required line consistently. This approach converts a general goal into a course-specific plan and reduces the risk of overlooking section minimums.

For Sussex applicants who need a structured starting point, the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit helps organise current-format practice around section-level diagnosis and measurable study steps. For learners managing different overall and section thresholds, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because it supports targeted planning and current 2026 score-scale practice.
