University of New England TOEFL Requirements 2026
UNE requires TOEFL iBT 79 with Writing 22; about 4.0 is ETS planning guidance only, and online/home tests are not accepted.
Verified requirement
For UNE’s standard English-language requirement, the current minimum is TOEFL iBT 79 overall with at least 22 in Writing. The score must have been attained within two years of the application date. UNE states that it will not consider take-home or online versions of TOEFL. Some courses use higher requirements. UNE TOEFL requirements on both score scales
UNE’s central admissions page still expresses its standard TOEFL requirement on the familiar 0-to-120 iBT scale: 79 overall, with Writing at least 22. UNE has not published a binding central 1-to-6 TOEFL minimum on the official pages reviewed for this article. That distinction matters because a general ETS transition comparison is not the same thing as a university admission rule.
ETS introduced the 1-to-6 TOEFL scale on 21 January 2026. In its institutional transition guidance, ETS recommends 4.0 when an institution previously set an 80-point requirement and 4.5 when it previously set a 90-point requirement. UNE’s 79-point standard is therefore reasonably planned around approximately 4.0, while a UNE requirement of 91 can be planned around approximately 4.5. These are planning references only. UNE’s own published numbers remain the admission authority until UNE posts a formal 1-to-6 rule.
| UNE scope | Official 0–120 rule | 1–6 treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Standard admission | 79 overall; Writing 22 | No UNE central rule published; about 4.0 is ETS-based planning guidance |
| Higher Degrees by Research and Master of Scientific Studies | 91 overall; Writing 22; Listening, Reading and Speaking 20 | No UNE 1–6 rule published; about 4.5 is ETS-based planning guidance |
| Selected regulated courses | Course-specific profiles apply | Use the exact current course rule; do not substitute a generic conversion |

Undergraduate, postgraduate and program-specific rules
For ordinary undergraduate and postgraduate coursework admission, start with UNE’s central English-language page. It publishes the standard 79 overall and Writing 22 profile and warns that some degrees have higher requirements. The central page does not create separate standard TOEFL numbers simply because an applicant is undergraduate or postgraduate.
Research applicants need a different check. UNE’s current higher-requirement annex states that all Higher Degrees by Research and the Master of Scientific Studies can satisfy the test route with TOEFL iBT 91 overall, at least 22 in Writing, and at least 20 in Listening, Reading and Speaking. This is a scoped research rule, not a new university-wide minimum.
Several professional courses have their own profiles. For example, the current annex gives Law a TOEFL iBT requirement of 91 with Writing 22 and Listening, Reading and Speaking 20. For Nursing tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, it publishes 91 overall with Listening 22, Reading 22, Writing 23 and Speaking 24. Social Work publishes 91 overall with Listening 22, Reading 22, Writing 26 and Speaking 24. Pharmacy publishes 94 overall with Writing and Listening 24 and Reading and Speaking 23. Applicants should use the rule attached to their exact degree rather than importing one program’s section floors into another.
UNE’s central page also imposes an important test-format restriction: it will not consider take-home or online versions of TOEFL. That means an at-home TOEFL result should not be treated as interchangeable with a test-centre result for UNE admission. The current central sources reviewed here do not publish a general MyBest policy, so this article does not assume that superscored results are accepted. If your application depends on combining results, confirm the rule for your exact program before testing.
Minimum score versus a sensible preparation target
A published minimum answers an eligibility question. It does not tell you the score distribution of admitted students, and UNE’s official pages reviewed for this article do not publish admitted-student TOEFL averages that would justify inventing a “competitive” number. For standard admission, 79 overall and Writing 22 are the verified thresholds. For research or a named professional course, use that course’s published profile instead.
A preparation target should therefore be built from the exact rule that applies to you, not from an unsupported buffer. If your degree uses the standard rule, your plan has two gates: the overall total and the Writing floor. A learner who reaches 79 overall but remains below 22 in Writing has not met the published standard. The same logic applies to the multi-section profiles in research, Nursing, Social Work, Law and Pharmacy.
Because TOEFL scores used for UNE must be attained within two years of the application date, timing is part of the admission plan. A strong score taken outside UNE’s stated validity window should not be assumed usable. Plan the test date so the result remains valid when you apply, and leave time for a retest if a required section remains below its floor.
Use Aidoss Academy T-G-R to plan for UNE
T-G-R means Target, Gap, Route. The first step is to write the exact UNE profile that governs your application before choosing practice material. For a standard applicant, the Target is 79 overall plus Writing 22. For a research applicant, the Target is 91 overall, Writing 22, and Listening, Reading and Speaking 20. Keeping the target in its full form prevents an overall score from hiding a missed section minimum.
Next, define the Gap from your latest complete practice evidence. Suppose a standard applicant records a practice result of 76 overall with Writing 19. The gap is not merely “three points overall.” It also includes a three-point Writing shortfall. The Route should therefore give Writing a larger share of correction and retesting while maintaining enough Reading, Listening and Speaking work to protect the overall total. After each new mock or structured practice cycle, rewrite the gap and adjust the route rather than following the same schedule automatically.
For applicants targeting UNE’s standard 79/W22 profile, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because the live TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit begins with a four-skill diagnostic and turns the result into a focused seven-day route. Its mistake-log and review pages also give you a concrete way to record what missed the target and decide what to retest next.
University of New England TOEFL FAQs
What TOEFL score does UNE require in 2026?
UNE’s standard TOEFL iBT minimum is 79 overall with at least 22 in Writing. Some programs publish higher profiles, including research and several professionally regulated degrees, so your course page and the current UNE annex should be checked before you rely on the standard number.
Does UNE accept the TOEFL Home Edition?
No, UNE’s central English-language page says take-home or online versions of TOEFL will not be considered. Applicants should therefore plan around an accepted test-centre format and verify any later policy change directly with UNE.
What is UNE’s TOEFL requirement on the new 1-to-6 scale?
UNE has not published a binding central 1-to-6 TOEFL minimum on the official pages reviewed here. ETS’s institutional transition guidance makes about 4.0 a useful planning reference for UNE’s 79-point standard and about 4.5 for 91-point profiles, but those estimates are not UNE admission rules.
