University of Copenhagen TOEFL Requirements 2026

The University of Copenhagen does not use one TOEFL score for every degree. Bachelor’s programmes are taught in Danish and follow Danish-language admission rules, while master’s programmes specify either English B or the higher English A level. The correct TOEFL target therefore depends on the exact master’s programme.

Requirement check, July 25, 2026: For master’s programmes requiring English B, the official minimum is TOEFL iBT 83 with at least 20 in every section on the old scale, or 4.5 overall with at least 4.5 in every section on the new scale. For English A, the minimum is 100 with at least 20 in every section, or 5.5 overall with at least 4.5 in every section. Confirm the assigned level on the official University of Copenhagen language-requirements page.

Official TOEFL scores for master’s applicants

The university tells applicants to check the programme website for the exact language level. English B is the lower of the two published profiles. English A is stricter and automatically satisfies English B, but the reverse is not true.

Programme level Old 0-120 scale New 1-6 scale
English B 83 overall, 20 in each section 4.5 overall, 4.5 in each section
English A 100 overall, 20 in each section 5.5 overall, 4.5 in each section

These are university-published requirements, not approximate conversions. ETS introduced the 1-6 scale on January 21, 2026 and provides a comparable 0-120 overall score during the transition. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter to understand how the two reporting systems relate, but follow Copenhagen’s official section floors exactly.

Bachelor’s and master’s rules are different

Bachelor’s admission

The University of Copenhagen states that all bachelor’s programmes are taught in Danish. Applicants must document the highest level of Danish proficiency or the required academic Danish-language qualification, along with programme-specific subject requirements. A general TOEFL minimum is therefore not the central bachelor’s admission rule. Some international diplomas may also need documented English at a Danish subject level, but that is not the same as a university-wide TOEFL cutoff.

Master’s admission

English-taught master’s programmes assign an English A or English B requirement. The admissions page is only the framework. The programme page remains decisive because it identifies which level applies and may contain additional academic requirements. Do not select 83 simply because it is the lower published score. A programme requiring English A expects the full 100 or 5.5 profile.

Programme and applicant distinctions

The university requires all applicants to document the relevant English level, including native speakers, and says it does not offer language-requirement waivers. It also rejects a general statement that a previous degree was taught in English as proof unless the qualification appears in the university’s accepted documentation routes. Applicants with a legal right of admission are treated separately under the university’s stated exception.

Test format, MyBest, validity, and reporting

Accepted formats: The central master’s policy lists both TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Home Edition for English A and English B.

MyBest Scores: MyBest scores are not accepted. Your overall result and all four section scores must satisfy the selected profile through an accepted score report.

Score validity: TOEFL results are valid for two years. The test cannot be older than two years when the programme begins on September 1 or February 1.

Documentation timing: For study start September 1, 2026, the university requires language documentation by the application deadline. A test passed after that deadline is rejected. Applicants upload the score report, or an official document containing the appointment number when the hard copy has not arrived.

Minimum score versus a sensible target

The published minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a promise of admission. Academic qualifications and programme selection still matter. A practical target should also protect against section risk. For English B, a 4.5 overall result does not help if one section is 4.0. For English A, a strong overall result still fails the stated rule if any section is below 4.5. Build a small buffer in the weakest section rather than chasing only the overall number.

A practical Aidoss method step

Use the D-R-E-C structure for a timed speaking answer: give a direct answer, state a reason, add a specific example, and close with the consequence. The useful step for Copenhagen applicants is the example, because it turns a general claim into evidence while keeping the answer controlled.

Worked example: Question: Should universities require group projects? Direct answer: Yes, when roles are clearly assigned. Reason: Students practise coordinating different strengths. Example: In a research seminar, one student can analyse data while another checks sources and presents the result. Consequence: The group produces stronger work and each student develops a defined collaborative skill.

University of Copenhagen TOEFL FAQs

Does Copenhagen require TOEFL 83 or 100?

It depends on the master’s programme. English B uses 83 or 4.5. English A uses 100 or 5.5. Check the specific programme page before setting your target.

Are there section minimums?

Yes. The old-scale minimum is 20 in each section for both English levels. The new-scale minimum is 4.5 in each section for both levels.

Does the university accept TOEFL Home Edition or MyBest?

The central master’s policy accepts the Home Edition. It does not accept MyBest scores.

Can I use TOEFL for a bachelor’s programme?

TOEFL is not a substitute for the central Danish-language requirement. Copenhagen states that its bachelor’s programmes are taught in Danish, so applicants must follow the bachelor’s Danish qualification and programme-specific subject rules.
