How do Calgary TOEFL requirements work on both scales?
The University of Calgary has already published requirements for both TOEFL score formats. That means applicants should use the rule attached to their test date rather than creating a private conversion. Tests taken before January 21, 2026 use the former 0 to 120 total and 0 to 30 section scores. Tests taken from January 21, 2026 use the current 1 to 6 scale in half-band increments.
| Applicant group | Earlier scale | Current scale |
|---|---|---|
| Most undergraduate programs | 86 overall | 4.5 overall |
| Nursing | 92, with 23 in every section | 5.0, with no section below 4.5 |
| Education | 108, with 27 in every section | 5.5, with no section below 5.5 |
| Graduate central minimum | 86, with no section below 20 | 4.5; R, W, S 4.0 and L 4.5 |
ETS reports the current overall score as the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. Through January 2028, official reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 overall result. The Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter can help applicants understand the two displays, but the university's own published threshold is the rule that matters.
Undergraduate, graduate, and program rules are different
Most undergraduate applicants can work from the general 86 or 4.5 requirement. Nursing and Education are important exceptions because both publish higher totals and section floors. A student applying to Nursing cannot rely on an overall score alone. Every section must reach 23 on the earlier scale or 4.5 on the current scale. Education is stricter: every section must reach 27 or 5.5.
The central graduate requirement is also 86 or 4.5, but graduate applicants have explicit section minimums. Reading, Writing, and Speaking must reach 4.0, while Listening must reach 4.5 under the current format. The university accepts TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition for this central graduate policy. Official results must be sent directly by the testing agency using institution code 0813 and the appropriate graduate-program code.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies warns that individual programs may set higher English requirements. Current examples include programs that require 97 or 5.0, while some medical and health-related programs publish still higher earlier-scale totals. Applicants should therefore open the program page after checking the central rule. A university-wide minimum is the starting point, not permission to ignore a stricter department requirement.
How competitive is UCalgary really?
A published TOEFL minimum confirms language eligibility; it does not predict admission. UCalgary states that meeting the Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum does not guarantee entry because graduate admission is competitive. The university does not publish one universal competitive TOEFL target above the minimum, so applicants should not invent one.
The practical approach is to protect every stated threshold. For a general graduate application, that means checking the four section minimums as carefully as the 4.5 total. For Nursing or Education, it means using the program-specific profile from the beginning. A stronger result can provide a margin above a minimum, but it cannot replace academic prerequisites, grades, references, or other program requirements.
How to prepare for the Calgary target
Aidoss Academy uses T-G-R: Target, Gap, Route. First, write the exact target for the degree and test date. Second, compare every diagnostic section with that profile. Third, build the route around the largest requirement gap rather than studying all four sections equally.
Worked example: a graduate applicant has Reading 4.5, Listening 4.0, Speaking 4.5, and Writing 4.5. The average can still produce a 4.5 overall, but Calgary's central graduate policy requires Listening 4.5. T-G-R identifies Listening as the blocking gap. The route should therefore prioritize timed academic-talk practice, error classification, and repeated listening checks before adding broad vocabulary work.
Use the free Essentials Edition of the TOEFL iBT 2026 Target Score Diagnostic Workbook to record the correct Calgary profile and locate the section that can block eligibility. The Complete Digital Edition adds the full diagnostic and routing workflow, which helps turn the verified requirement into a focused study plan instead of a general checklist.
