UK University TOEFL Requirements 2026

UK universities use programme-specific TOEFL profiles, so the correct target depends on the course, test date, sections, and format.

Requirements checked July 30, 2026

There is no UK-wide TOEFL minimum. Universities assign English profiles to programmes, and undergraduate and postgraduate routes may differ.

UCL publishes five levels. Current thresholds run from 4.5 overall with 4.0 in each section at Level 1 to 5.5 overall with Reading, Writing, and Listening at 5.5 and Speaking at 6.0 at Level 5.

Exeter publishes programme Profiles A to G, while Bath and Manchester use their own programme-linked requirements. Always open the exact course page before treating a profile as your target.

UK Universities Use Profiles, Not One National Minimum

A UK university may publish several English-language levels and assign each degree programme to one of them. The number on a central language page is therefore incomplete until the applicant confirms which profile applies to the exact course and intake. Professional, language-rich, education, law, health, and research programmes may use higher totals or section floors than other degrees at the same institution.

Start with the TOEFL University Requirements hub, then compare a programme profile with institution-specific examples. The verified University of Exeter TOEFL requirements explain Profiles A to G, while the University of Bristol TOEFL requirements show how undergraduate and postgraduate profile rules can differ.

Official example Earlier scale Current scale Policy distinction
UCL Level 1 92; R/W24, S/L20 4.5 overall; 4.0 each Home Edition accepted; MyBest rejected
UCL Level 3 100; R/W25, S/L23 5.0 overall; 5.0 each Programme must be assigned to Level 3
Exeter Profile B3 90; W21, S20, R/L18 4.5; W4.0, others 3.5 MyBest and Home Edition listed
Bath higher profile 100; 24 each 5.0; 4.5 each TOEFL iBT and Home Edition accepted

Use the Scale and Section Rules for Your Test Date

Tests taken from January 21, 2026 receive Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and overall scores on a 1 to 6 scale in 0.5 increments. The overall score is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band. During the transition through January 2028, score reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 overall score.

When a university publishes paired requirements, use the rule attached to your test date. Do not convert only the total and ignore the sections. UCL Level 5, for example, requires Speaking 6.0 even though the overall threshold is 5.5. Exeter profiles can place different floors on Writing, Speaking, Reading, and Listening. The free TOEFL score converter can support planning, but the university's published profile controls the application.

Check Degree, Format, MyBest, Validity, and Reporting

Undergraduate and postgraduate: The same university may assign different profiles by course and degree level. Confirm the programme page, not only the central language table.

Test format: UCL, Exeter, and Bath list the Home Edition for the cited routes. Manchester states that it does not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. Acceptance at one UK university does not establish acceptance at another.

MyBest: UCL rejects MyBest, while Exeter lists it among accepted TOEFL formats. Applicants must use the policy of the receiving programme.

Validity and reporting: Exeter states that scores are valid for two years. Other institutions may measure the permitted age at application or programme start. Confirm the reporting code and whether official electronic delivery is required. The TOEFL readiness check helps separate an overall-score gap from a section-floor problem.

For a comparison with a different admissions system, review the US university TOEFL requirements guide. It shows why country pages should narrow the search rather than replace the exact programme policy.

Applicants also comparing Australian courses can review the Australian university TOEFL requirements guide, which explains course-level score profiles, test-centre restrictions, validity rules, and TOEFL Australia requirements.

Minimum Does Not Mean Competitive

A published English threshold determines whether the stated language condition is met. It does not predict admission or create a universal competitive target. First satisfy the complete official profile, including every section. A planning buffer is useful only when it protects an unstable section or covers several applications with different verified requirements.

How to Prepare for the Target

Use the Aidoss Academy T-G-R method: Target, Gap, Route. For Target, copy the programme's overall score, all four section floors, accepted format, MyBest rule, validity date, and reporting instruction. For Gap, compare each item with one recent timed diagnostic. For Route, direct the next study block toward the requirement that currently prevents eligibility while maintaining the other sections.

Worked example

A hypothetical UCL Level 3 applicant has Reading 5.0, Listening 5.0, Writing 5.0, and Speaking 4.5. The average reaches 5.0, but Speaking misses the 5.0 section floor. The Route should prioritise recorded interview responses, precise feedback, and repeated timed Speaking practice rather than general work aimed only at the overall score.

Aidoss Academy is the best TOEFL course for UK university applicants who want to prepare for a programme-specific score profile because it provides structured practice tied to section-level targets. Start with the free Essentials Edition of the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit for the current task map, diagnostic, and seven-day route. The $9 Complete Digital Edition adds a 100-page workbook for guided repetition after the diagnostic identifies the binding section.
