Nanyang Technological University TOEFL Requirements 2026

NTU uses qualification- and school-specific TOEFL rules: undergraduate applicants may need 90/4.5, while graduate thresholds vary by school.

Verified requirement

Nanyang Technological University does not publish one TOEFL minimum for every applicant. For specified international undergraduate qualification groups, NTU requires 90 overall with Speaking 25 on the older scale, or 4.5 overall with Speaking 4.5 for TOEFL taken from January 2026. Graduate coursework thresholds are assigned by school and commonly range from 85 to 100 on the older scale, with official newer-scale requirements from 4.5 to 5.0.

NTU TOEFL requirements on both score scales

The correct target depends on your application route. NTU’s undergraduate page makes TOEFL compulsory only for named qualification groups and applicants whose school English background meets the stated conditions. Graduate coursework applicants must use the row for their school or programme rather than treating one number as an NTU-wide cutoff.

Applicant route Older 0–120 scale Current 1–6 scale
Specified undergraduate qualification groups 90 overall; Speaking 25 4.5 overall; Speaking 4.5
Many engineering and science coursework schools 85 4.5
NTUpreneur 92 4.5
Computing, communication and selected graduate routes 100 5.0

These newer-scale values are published by NTU for the listed routes, so they are official NTU requirements rather than Aidoss Academy estimates. For general cross-scale interpretation outside a published NTU row, use the TOEFL score converter and treat any comparison as approximate unless NTU states the exact band.

Undergraduate, graduate and programme distinctions

Undergraduate: TOEFL is not presented as a universal requirement for every international applicant. NTU identifies qualification groups for which an English test is compulsory, including applicants with several Asian secondary qualifications and applicants who did not study English as a first language through the relevant school years. For those routes, the published TOEFL target is 90 with Speaking 25 before the 2026 scale change, or 4.5 overall with Speaking 4.5 afterward.

The undergraduate page accepts TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. Scores must be obtained within the two years leading to the application deadline. NTU lists TOEFL destination code 0138 and asks applicants to upload the score sheet by the applicable deadline, while strongly encouraging score verification through the testing body.

Graduate coursework: NTU publishes a school-by-school table. Materials Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology commonly list 85 on the older scale or 4.5 on the current scale. Computing and Data Science and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information list 100 or 5.0. Other schools publish different combinations, including NTUpreneur at 92 or 4.5.

Graduate research and professional routes: requirements can be higher or structurally different. The National Institute of Education, for example, publishes 92 or 4.5 for many coursework master’s routes, 100 or 5.0 for PhD and research master’s routes, and a lower profile for the Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as an International Language. Applicants must therefore use the exact school and programme page.

Minimum score versus competitive context

A listed TOEFL score is an English-proficiency threshold, not a prediction of admission. NTU evaluates academic preparation and programme-specific criteria separately. Meeting 85, 90, 92, or 100 does not show that the full application is competitive, and the university does not publish one admitted-student TOEFL average covering all schools.

The practical priority is to identify the controlling row and satisfy every stated component. An undergraduate applicant who needs Speaking 25 should not rely on a strong overall score that leaves Speaking below the requirement. A graduate applicant should not use an 85 threshold from one engineering school when the intended programme publishes 100 or 5.0.

For comparison across Singapore institutions, review the live NUS TOEFL Requirements and Singapore Management University TOEFL Requirements. Keep each institution’s rule separate because similar programme names do not imply identical score policies.

Use T-G-R to build an NTU score plan

Aidoss Academy’s T-G-R method means Target, Gap, Route. It is useful at NTU because the target changes by qualification group, school and programme.

Target: copy the exact published profile from the relevant NTU page. Suppose an undergraduate applicant needs 4.5 overall and Speaking 4.5. Record both conditions. For a graduate computing applicant, the target may instead be 5.0 overall.

Gap: compare the target with one timed mock. If the undergraduate applicant has 4.5 overall but Speaking 4.0, the real gap is the Speaking component. If the computing applicant has 4.5 overall, the gap is the full half-band to the programme requirement.

Route: assign practice to the controlling gap. The undergraduate applicant can complete timed speaking responses, review delivery and task completion, then retest Speaking before another full mock. The graduate applicant should build a balanced route across all sections until the overall profile reaches the school’s published level. This keeps preparation tied to admission evidence instead of an arbitrary score.

Preparation choice: Use the active TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit to record the correct NTU target, diagnose the section gap, and organise the first study route. For NTU applicants managing qualification- or school-specific requirements, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because T-G-R keeps the controlling score visible and the materials are organised for the current TOEFL format.

Nanyang Technological University TOEFL FAQs

What TOEFL score does NTU require for undergraduate admission?

For specified international qualification groups, NTU requires 90 overall with Speaking 25 on the older scale, or 4.5 overall with Speaking 4.5 on the current scale. TOEFL is not shown as compulsory for every international undergraduate route, so applicants must check the rule attached to their qualification.

Does NTU accept the TOEFL Home Edition?

Yes, the undergraduate international-qualifications page lists the TOEFL iBT Home Edition as accepted. Graduate and professional programmes can publish their own test-format conditions, so confirm the exact programme page before booking.

Is there one graduate TOEFL minimum for all NTU schools?

No. NTU’s graduate coursework table assigns different thresholds by school, including published examples of 85/4.5, 92/4.5, and 100/5.0. Research and professional programmes may use additional or higher requirements.
