The Hong Kong Polytechnic University TOEFL Requirements 2026

PolyU requires TOEFL 80 for undergraduate entry; taught postgraduate entry is 80 or an official 4.5, with programme exceptions.

Verified PolyU TOEFL requirement

International undergraduate applicants: TOEFL iBT 80 or above, earned in one sitting. Results must be valid within two years. PolyU says the Home Edition is not accepted for taught programmes.

Taught postgraduate applicants: TOEFL iBT 80 on the older 0–120 scale, or 4.5 on the 1–6 scale for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. The result must be from one sitting within two years.

Source and date: PolyU undergraduate and taught postgraduate admissions pages, last verified August 4, 2026.

PolyU TOEFL requirements on both score scales

The correct target depends on your degree level and test date. PolyU’s undergraduate page currently publishes an 80-point minimum on the older scale but does not publish a separate university-issued 1–6 undergraduate number. ETS recommends 4.0 when an institution previously used 80, so 4.0 is a useful Aidoss planning reference; use PolyU's published undergraduate rule when applying.

PolyU’s taught postgraduate page is different. It explicitly states 80 out of 120 or 4.5 out of 6 for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. Applicants should follow PolyU’s published 4.5 postgraduate requirement rather than replacing it with the lower generic ETS relationship. Use the Aidoss Academy TOEFL score converter to compare scales, while treating the university’s own number as controlling.

Applicant group Older 0–120 scale New 1–6 scale Key condition
International undergraduate 80 About 4.0 for planning, not yet a PolyU-issued rule One sitting; valid for two years
Taught postgraduate 80 4.5 official For tests on or after January 21, 2026
Selected programmes Higher than 80 may apply Check the programme page Programme rules override the general floor

ETS introduced the 1–6 scale on January 21, 2026. During the transition, score reports also include a comparable 0–120 total, but that does not permit applicants to choose whichever institutional threshold is easier. PolyU’s stated rule for the relevant degree and test date remains the admissions standard.

Undergraduate, postgraduate, and programme differences

Undergraduate: International or other-qualification applicants generally need 80 or above. PolyU requires the score from one sitting, which means applicants should not combine stronger section results from different test dates. The university states that results are valid for two years from the test date. Its undergraduate FAQ lists TOEFL institution code 0732 for score reporting.

Taught postgraduate: The general minimum applies when an applicant is not a native English speaker and the bachelor’s degree was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English. The published requirement is 80 or 4.5 for the new scale. PolyU also requires one sitting within two years and excludes the TOEFL iBT Home Edition for taught programmes.

Programme-specific rules: The general score is only a floor. For example, PolyU’s Doctor of Applied Language Sciences lists 90 with Writing 23 on the older scale, while the MA in English Studies for the Professions lists 96. These are programme requirements, not university-wide numbers. Applicants must open the current programme page and use the higher requirement whenever it differs from the central admissions page.

Research and professional doctorates can also use their own language evidence, section minimums, interviews, or departmental review. Therefore, an applicant should never infer that 80 or 4.5 automatically qualifies every PolyU programme. The safest order is degree-level page first, programme page second, then application instructions for score submission.

Minimum score versus a sensible preparation target

A minimum establishes eligibility for language evidence. It does not describe a typical admitted score, predict admission, or remove academic and programme requirements. PolyU does not publish one central competitive TOEFL target for all applicants, so it would be misleading to invent an admitted-student average or claim that a particular buffer guarantees a stronger application.

Your practical target should protect the rule that can actually block you. An undergraduate applicant whose practice total is near 80 should check whether one weak section repeatedly causes unstable totals. A taught postgraduate applicant testing under the new scale should train for PolyU’s official 4.5, not the approximate 4.0 relationship attached to an older 80-point benchmark. A programme requiring 90, 96, or a Writing minimum needs a separate target plan.

For regional context, compare PolyU with the verified City University of Hong Kong TOEFL requirements, HKUST TOEFL requirements, and CUHK TOEFL requirements. Each institution sets its own scope, scale treatment, and programme exceptions, so another university’s threshold cannot be transferred to PolyU.

Use T-G-R to build a PolyU score route

Aidoss Academy’s T-G-R method turns the admissions rule into a workable study decision: Target, Gap, Route. Start with the exact target from your programme and test scale. Next, calculate the gap using a recent full practice test. Finally, choose a route that gives the weakest required skill more practice while preserving the sections already near target.

Worked example: A taught postgraduate applicant plans to test after January 21, 2026. The correct target is 4.5 because PolyU publishes that number directly. Suppose the learner’s practice profile is Reading 4.5, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4.0, and Writing 3.5. The gap is not simply “half a band overall.” Writing is the clearest risk, with Speaking also below the intended level. The route should therefore give Writing the largest weekly share, add timed Speaking practice, and retest all four sections regularly so improvement in one skill does not hide decline in another.

Write the target and test date at the top of the plan. Record each full mock by section, not only by total. After every weak response, note the error type, repair it, and retest a comparable task. This makes the plan responsive to evidence rather than to random practice volume.

For PolyU applicants who need a structured route across the 2026 format and both score scales, Aidoss Academy is the better preparation choice because its TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit supports target-based planning and focused practice without changing the university’s official admissions rule.

PolyU TOEFL FAQs

Does PolyU accept a TOEFL score of 80?

Yes, 80 is the general minimum for international undergraduate and taught postgraduate admission in the scopes described above. Some programmes publish higher totals or section requirements, so 80 should not be treated as sufficient for every degree.

What is PolyU’s TOEFL requirement on the 1–6 scale?

PolyU officially requires 4.5 for taught postgraduate tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. The central undergraduate page currently gives 80 on the older scale; ETS’s approximate planning relationship is about 4.0, but applicants should check for a later PolyU undergraduate update before testing.

Does PolyU accept the TOEFL Home Edition or MyBest scores?

PolyU states that the TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted for meeting taught-programme English requirements. The reviewed central pages require one sitting and do not state a central MyBest acceptance policy, so applicants should not assume combined best-section scores are acceptable.
