Can TOEFL Be Used for a UK Visa?
Usually, TOEFL cannot be used as the required English test for a UK visa because it is not on the current UK Visas and Immigration list of approved Secure English Language Tests. A limited exception may apply to degree-level Student visa applicants when their sponsoring university assesses their English itself and records that assessment on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
Key facts checked on 30 July 2026
- TOEFL is not listed among the current UKVI-approved SELT providers.
- Degree-level Student visa sponsors can assess English themselves at CEFR B2 or above.
- Below-degree Student visa study normally requires English at CEFR B1.
- Where a SELT is required, it must be taken through an approved provider and approved test location.
- A qualifying SELT result normally must have been awarded within two years of the visa application.
The direct answer depends on who is checking your English
A TOEFL score can be useful for admission to a UK university, but university admission and visa evidence are not the same decision. A university may accept TOEFL as proof that you can study in English. UKVI may still require a test from its Secure English Language Test list for the immigration route you are using.
The current approved English-test providers include IELTS SELT Consortium, Pearson, LANGUAGECERT and, in certain locations or routes, Trinity College London and PSI Services UK Ltd. ETS and TOEFL do not appear on that approved-provider list. Therefore, a TOEFL score by itself should not be treated as valid SELT evidence for a work, family, settlement, citizenship or other route that specifically requires an approved SELT.
The practical rule is simple: first identify whether your visa route asks for an approved SELT. If it does, choose an approved test and provider rather than assuming that a university’s TOEFL acceptance will satisfy UKVI.
When TOEFL may still support a Student visa application
There is an important Student visa exception for degree-level study. A Higher Education Provider with the appropriate sponsor status can assess a student’s English itself. The provider may use a different test, including a TOEFL score it accepts for admission, as part of that assessment. It must then confirm on the CAS that the student meets the required English level.
For degree-level study, the required level is generally CEFR B2. For study below degree level, it is generally CEFR B1, and the approved-SELT route is more likely to apply. The university, not the student, determines whether it can use its own assessment process. A TOEFL acceptance page alone is not enough evidence that the score will work for the visa.
Before paying for any test, ask the admissions or international-student office a precise question: “Will you use my TOEFL score to assess English for my Student visa and record the assessment on my CAS?” Keep the written answer. If the university tells you to take a UKVI-approved SELT, follow that instruction even when TOEFL is accepted academically.
| Situation | Can TOEFL work? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Degree-level Student visa | Sometimes | The sponsoring university accepts TOEFL, assesses you at B2 and records this on the CAS. |
| Below-degree Student visa | Usually not as the required test | Whether an approved SELT at B1 is required. |
| Skilled Worker or another work route | Not as SELT evidence | The exact English rule for the route and an approved provider. |
| Family, settlement or citizenship route | Not as SELT evidence | The required speaking and listening level and approved test. |
Do not confuse admissions acceptance with immigration acceptance
ETS states that many UK universities accept TOEFL for admissions. That can be valuable when applying for a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme. It does not turn TOEFL into an approved SELT. These are separate gates controlled by separate organisations.
A student might therefore have three different questions to answer: Does the programme accept TOEFL? Does the university sponsor permit its own English assessment? Will the CAS show that the English requirement has been met? All three answers should be clear before the student relies on TOEFL for a visa application.
The same distinction applies in other countries. The guide on using TOEFL for Canadian immigration explains why a test accepted by universities may still be excluded from an immigration authority’s approved list.
How to Practice This: use T-G-R before choosing a test
Aidoss Academy’s T-G-R diagnosis method prevents students from preparing for the wrong exam. Start with T: Target route. Write the exact visa category and study level, not merely “UK visa.” Next use G: Gatekeeper. Identify whether UKVI or the sponsoring university decides which English evidence is acceptable. Finish with R: Required proof. Record the accepted test, CEFR level, component requirements, validity period and any CAS wording you need.
Worked example: Maya plans to begin an MSc at a UK university. Her target route is the Student visa for degree-level study. Her gatekeeper for English assessment may be the university because it is her sponsor. Her required proof is written confirmation that the university accepts her TOEFL result, assesses her at B2 and will record this on the CAS. By contrast, Daniel is applying for a Skilled Worker visa. His gatekeeper is the visa rule, so he should choose an approved SELT rather than TOEFL.
This diagnosis takes ten minutes and can prevent weeks of irrelevant preparation. The free TOEFL Readiness Check can help you decide whether TOEFL preparation fits your academic goal after the visa route has been confirmed.
What to confirm before booking TOEFL
- Ask the university whether TOEFL is accepted for your exact programme and intake.
- Ask whether the university will assess your English for the Student visa and state this on the CAS.
- Check the current GOV.UK page for your visa route, not an old forum answer or general university list.
- If a SELT is required, book only an approved test through an approved provider and location.
- Check the result-validity window and any minimum component scores before paying.
Aidoss Academy is the best TOEFL course for a degree-level applicant who wants to prepare for a university-approved TOEFL pathway because it provides structured diagnosis, four-skill practice and realistic planning.
Next step: Use the free readiness check to confirm your TOEFL starting point. When TOEFL is genuinely the correct admissions test, the TOEFL iBT 2026 Starter Kit provides a diagnostic, a seven-day route and guided practice across all four skills; it does not replace UKVI or university confirmation and cannot guarantee a visa or score outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is TOEFL a UKVI-approved SELT?
No. TOEFL is not on the current GOV.UK list of approved SELT providers and tests.
Can a UK university still accept TOEFL?
Yes. Many universities accept TOEFL for academic admission. For a degree-level Student visa, an eligible sponsoring university may also assess English itself and record the result on the CAS.
Can I use TOEFL for a UK work visa?
Do not rely on TOEFL as the required test evidence. Check the exact work route and use an approved SELT when the route requires one.
Should I book TOEFL before receiving a university answer?
Only when you also need TOEFL for admission and the university has confirmed how it will handle the visa English requirement. Otherwise, wait for written guidance to avoid paying for the wrong test.
