Cambridge TOEFL Requirements 2026: Scores (1–6 and 0–120)
Cambridge postgraduate courses commonly list 110 with 25 in each section for TOEFL taken on or before January 21, 2026. Tests taken after that date are still accepted but trigger an additional Cambridge Language Centre assessment. At undergraduate level, Cambridge's own page does not list TOEFL among its accepted qualifications.
Verified requirement
Postgraduate: Cambridge accepts TOEFL iBT, including the Home Edition, taken on or before January 21, 2026. Requirements are course-specific; many courses list 110 overall with 25 in Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing, while some use different totals. All elements must be met in the same sitting.
Postgraduate, tests from January 22, 2026 onward: still accepted, but an applicant who meets the score condition with a revised-format test “will be asked to take an additional online assessment at the University of Cambridge Language Centre.” Cambridge has not withdrawn TOEFL — it has added a step.
Undergraduate: the admitting College sets any English condition. Cambridge's central undergraduate page lists IELTS Academic (normally 7.5 overall, usually 7.0 per element), C1-level school-leaving qualifications, and Cambridge English (C2 Proficiency 200 overall with no element under 185; C1 Advanced 193 overall with no element under 185, alongside other evidence). TOEFL does not appear on that list. An undergraduate applicant planning to rely on TOEFL should confirm directly with the College making the offer before booking a test.
New 1–6 scale: Cambridge publishes no central 1–6 TOEFL threshold. Some Cambridge units, such as continuing-education courses, publish 5.5 overall with no element below 5.0. Treat that as unit-specific, not a university-wide rule.

A correction worth reading before you plan anything
A claim circulating widely in 2026 is that Cambridge “dropped TOEFL entirely.” That is not what Cambridge's pages say. The postgraduate page still lists TOEFL iBT as an accepted test. What changed is that a revised-format test now triggers an extra online assessment at the University Language Centre once you meet your score condition.
The undergraduate picture is different, and it is the part most summaries get backwards. Cambridge's undergraduate entry requirements page lists IELTS, C1-level school qualifications, and Cambridge English — and does not include TOEFL. So the honest answer depends entirely on which level you are applying to. If someone tells you Cambridge accepts TOEFL, or that it doesn't, ask them which page they read.
How the requirement works on the two score scales
| Old 0–120 score | Approximate 1–6 band | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | about 5.0 | Some Cambridge postgraduate courses use this total |
| 107–113 | about 5.5 | Conversion band containing the common 110 requirement |
| 110 | about 5.5 | Common postgraduate total with 25 in each section |
Cambridge does not use one TOEFL number for every applicant. Postgraduate applicants must check the Course Directory, because individual courses publish their own totals and component scores. Many language-intensive courses list 110 with 25 in each section.
Use the free TOEFL score converter for planning, but follow the exact course policy rather than treating 5.5 as a university-wide rule.
How competitive is Cambridge really?
The English condition is a readiness threshold, not an admissions ranking. A 110 does not replace the academic record, subject preparation, written work, interview performance, or research fit required by the course. Cambridge interviews are conducted in English, and the university expects a good C1 standard across all four competencies by the time you start.
A balanced profile is especially important when the condition is 25 in every section. A total of 112 with Writing 23 still misses that requirement. Moving from a roughly 5.0 profile to a stable 5.5 level, particularly with four section floors, normally requires several weeks of focused practice. Full tests alone are inefficient when one repeated weakness is deciding eligibility.
How to prepare for a 110 at Cambridge
Use T-G-R: Target, Gap, Route. Confirm the exact course condition and whether the additional Language Centre assessment applies to your test date. Set the target as 110 with 25 in each section only when that is the published condition. Complete a timed diagnostic, calculate each section gap, and route the largest practice share to the weakest section.
For a diagnostic of 26 Reading, 24 Listening, 23 Speaking, and 25 Writing, Speaking is two points below the common section floor and Listening is one point below. A useful week gives Speaking the largest block, Listening the second largest, and Reading and Writing shorter maintenance sessions. Retest the weak sections before spending another full test merely to produce a new total.
