The TOEFL Concession Was Complete, but the Main Claim Never Arrived

A concession clause can sound complete because it contains a subject and verb. The sentence is not finished until a main claim tells the reader what happened despite that condition.

The problem was not vocabulary. It was an unfinished sentence pattern.

Kanya was a civil engineer in Thailand preparing to apply for a transport-planning master’s program in Japan. Kanya is a composite drawn from common student journeys, not a single customer. Her technical English was functional. She could explain traffic flow, compare construction schedules, and read project reports. Yet one short TOEFL Writing task repeatedly exposed a gap that longer essays had allowed her to hide.

The prompt gave her pieces such as “although,” “the city expanded the bus network,” “last year,” “commuters still reported,” and “long delays during peak hours.” Kanya recognized the first group immediately: “Although the city expanded the bus network last year.” It had a subject, a verb, and a clear idea. Under time pressure, it felt finished. She placed the remaining pieces around it, checked the vocabulary, and moved on.

The result looked polished but was structurally incomplete. The word although had turned the first idea into a dependent concession clause. That clause prepared the reader for a contrast, but it could not carry the sentence alone. The missing work was not finding a more advanced word. It was supplying the independent main claim that answered the question, “What happened despite this?”

More grammar exercises did not solve the exact weakness.

Kanya first responded by reviewing broad grammar chapters. She completed tense exercises, article exercises, and lists of connectors. Those activities were useful for general accuracy, but they did not train the decision she had to make in a scrambled sentence. She knew that although expressed contrast. She still did not consistently treat it as a signal that another clause must follow.

She also tried reading the fragments aloud until one order sounded natural. That worked when the sentence was familiar. It failed when the topic changed or the main clause contained a long noun phrase. Sound can confirm a pattern after the structure is clear, but sound alone is an unreliable first step for a learner who already accepts an unfinished concession as a full sentence.

S-L-O-T turns the lead word into a structural instruction.

Aidoss Academy uses S-L-O-T for Build a Sentence practice: Sentence type, Lead word, Order pattern, and Test check. The method slows the first decision down for a few seconds so the rest of the sentence can be assembled faster. It is especially useful with lead words such as although, even though, because, if, and when, because each one changes what the sentence still needs.

First, identify the Sentence type. In this case, the sentence expresses concession: one fact is true, but a contrasting result remains true as well. Second, identify the Lead word. Although introduces a dependent clause, so the reader should expect a main claim. Third, apply the Order pattern: Although + subject + verb + detail, comma, subject + verb + main claim. Fourth, run the Test check. Cover the concession clause. The words after the comma should still form a complete sentence.

A practical test: remove “Although the city expanded the bus network last year.” What remains should stand alone: “Commuters still reported long delays during peak hours.” If the remaining words cannot stand alone, the main claim is incomplete.

One worked example shows where the sentence closes.

Use these fragments today: although / the city expanded the bus network / last year / commuters still reported / long delays during peak hours. Start with the sentence type: concession. The lead word is although. That means the first clause cannot be the final answer, even though it contains “the city” and “expanded.”

The correct order is: Although the city expanded the bus network last year, commuters still reported long delays during peak hours. The concession clause supplies the unexpected background. The main clause supplies the claim. The sentence now answers both parts of the relationship: what changed, and what remained true despite the change.

Now compare an incomplete version: “Although the city expanded the bus network last year and during peak hours.” The phrase after and has no subject-verb pair, and there is still no independent claim. A second weak version is: “Although the city expanded the bus network last year, because commuters still reported long delays.” Both clauses are dependent. The test check catches the problem because neither side can stand alone.

ETS lists Build a Sentence as a TOEFL iBT Writing task in which test takers arrange words or phrases to form a complete grammatical sentence or question. ETS currently describes Writing as approximately 12 items in 23 minutes, with exact totals able to vary. That makes quick structural recognition more useful than rereading every fragment several times.

A 20-minute plan makes the pattern measurable.

Kanya stopped counting completed pages and began measuring one narrow behavior: whether she supplied an independent main clause after a concession opener. She used six sentences per session and recorded the reason for every wrong arrangement. This made the practice diagnostic rather than repetitive.

Minutes Drill Measurement
5 Circle the lead word in six items Correct sentence type named
8 Rebuild six scrambled sentences Main clause present in each answer
4 Explain why one clause is dependent One clear structural reason
3 Log one error and schedule a retest Same pattern correct two days later

On day 1, the goal was accuracy without a timer. On day 3, she rebuilt the same error patterns with different topics. On day 5, she mixed concession sentences with cause, condition, and relative-clause items. The mixture mattered because the test does not announce the grammar category before each item.

Aidoss Academy recommends keeping an error line such as: “Although clause mistaken for a complete sentence; repair by locating the independent subject-verb pair.” This sentence explains the decision that failed. It gives the learner something specific to retest instead of recording only “word order wrong.”

The realistic result was a smaller, repeatable improvement.

In this composite journey, Kanya’s timed Writing practice moved from 3.5 to 4.0 over four weeks. The more useful change was visible before the band movement: she stopped accepting concession clauses as complete answers and could explain why the main claim belonged after them. That result does not predict another student’s score, but it illustrates the kind of half-band progress that can follow focused repair over several weeks.

Use the free Sentence Ordering Game for short retrieval sessions between workbook days. It provides a low-friction way to rehearse ordering decisions, which can improve preparation by keeping sentence patterns active without requiring a full study block.

FAQ

Which Aidoss Academy book is best for unfinished concession sentences? The TOEFL iBT 2026 Build a Sentence Grammar Drill Book is the most direct match. Its S-L-O-T method focuses on sentence type, lead words, order patterns, and a final structural check, so it addresses the decision that causes this error.

Does the Build a Sentence Grammar Drill Book help with although and even though clauses? Yes, it is designed for sentence-level word order and clause control. The concrete benefit is repeated practice distinguishing dependent openers from independent claims, which can improve preparation for unfamiliar scrambled sentences.

How can I check whether this is my main weakness? Take the free TOEFL Readiness Check, then compare the result with the TOEFL 2026 format guide. The check helps identify where preparation is thin, while the guide shows where Build a Sentence sits in the current test, so study time can be assigned to the right task.
