What Is a TOEFL 3.5 Score?

A TOEFL 3.5 is aligned with CEFR B1 and corresponds to roughly 58–71 on the earlier total scale. It can meet some published requirements, but it is not a universal passing score.

TOEFL 3.5 at a glance

• CEFR alignment: B1

• Earlier total-scale comparison: approximately 58–71

• Common old-scale requirement recommended by ETS for 3.5: 70

• Overall score calculation: average of four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band

• Admission meaning: determined by the exact institution and programme

A 3.5 means B1 proficiency on the current scale

ETS introduced the 1–6 TOEFL scale on January 21, 2026. A 3.5 overall score aligns with B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The same B1 alignment applies when a section score is 3.5. This is a proficiency description, not an admission guarantee. Universities decide which overall and section scores they will accept.

Your overall score is the average of Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band. A 3.5 total can therefore come from different section combinations. One student might have four section scores of 3.5. Another might have stronger Reading and Listening but weaker Speaking and Writing. That difference matters when a programme publishes section minimums.

Use the TOEFL score converter to compare the current and earlier scales, then read the complete 1–6 versus 0–120 conversion guide for the limits of score comparisons.

A 3.5 is roughly 58–71 on the earlier total scale

Current score CEFR Earlier total comparison Planning meaning
3.0 B1 Approximately 44–57 Below many direct-entry thresholds
3.5 B1 Approximately 58–71 Can meet selected published requirements
4.0 B2 Approximately 72–85 Meets a broader set of published thresholds

The comparison is approximate because scores on the two systems are not interchangeable point by point. ETS reports a comparable overall 0–120 estimate during the transition through January 2028. For older tests, ETS’s comparison table places 3.5 at 58 or higher, with 4.0 beginning at 72. ETS also recommends that institutions moving from a common requirement of 70 use 3.5 on the current scale.

If your next target is the B2 band, read what a TOEFL 4.0 score means, including its approximate 72–85 comparison range and why section minimums can still control admission.

Whether 3.5 is enough depends on the exact requirement

There is no universal TOEFL passing score. A 3.5 can be sufficient when the official page explicitly accepts 3.5 or an earlier-scale score near 70. For example, Arizona State University publishes a 3.5 undergraduate baseline for selected applicants, while its graduate baseline is higher. Other universities and programmes require 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, or more. The ASU TOEFL requirements guide shows why degree level must be checked separately.

Do not stop at the overall minimum. Check whether the institution requires a minimum in Reading, Listening, Speaking, or Writing; whether it accepts the Home Edition or MyBest scores; and whether the score will still be valid when it is reviewed. Start with the TOEFL University Requirements 2026 hub, then open the official admissions page for your exact programme.

A score that meets the published minimum is eligible evidence, not proof of admission. The guide to choosing a good TOEFL score explains how to build a target from the minimum, section rules, deadline, and programme context without inventing a competitive score.

Read the section profile before deciding what to improve

An overall 3.5 does not identify the same problem for every student. Suppose your scores are Reading 4.0, Listening 4.0, Speaking 3.0, and Writing 3.0. The average is 3.5, but a programme requiring 3.5 in every section would reject this profile even though the total meets 3.5. A second student with four 3.5 section scores would satisfy that particular pattern.

Your official report should therefore be read in two passes. First, compare the overall score with the institution’s total requirement. Second, compare every section with any published floor. The TOEFL score report guide explains what appears on the report and how the current and comparable total scores are displayed.

How to Practice This

Use the Aidoss Academy T-G-R method: Target, Gap, Route. Target means copying the exact overall and section requirements from the official programme page. Gap means subtracting your current section bands from those requirements. Route means choosing the smallest practice plan that addresses the binding gap and includes a timed retest.

Worked example: your overall score is 3.5, with Reading 4.0, Listening 3.5, Speaking 3.0, and Writing 3.5. Your programme requires 4.0 overall and at least 3.5 in each section. The binding gap is Speaking, because it misses the section floor by 0.5. The route is not four equal study blocks. It is a focused Speaking block, lighter maintenance in the other sections, and a full timed check after enough targeted practice to test whether the score profile changed.

Use the free TOEFL Readiness Check first, then open the TOEFL iBT 2026 Target Score Diagnostic Workbook. The Essentials Edition provides a free structure for defining the target and locating the weakest section; the Complete Digital Edition adds a fuller diagnostic workflow for converting that gap into a section-by-section study route.

Frequently asked questions

Is TOEFL 3.5 a passing score?
No universal passing score exists. It passes only when the exact institution and programme accept 3.5 overall and your section scores satisfy any additional rules.

What old TOEFL score is 3.5?
ETS’s comparison table places 3.5 at approximately 58–71 on the earlier total scale. ETS separately recommends 3.5 when an institution is replacing a common old requirement of 70.

What CEFR level is TOEFL 3.5?
A 3.5 total or section score aligns with CEFR B1 under the current ETS scale.

Should I retake a 3.5?
Retake only after checking your programme. A retake is necessary when 3.5 misses the overall rule, a section floor, the required test format, or the score-validity window.
