TOEFL Study Plan for Three Weeks
A three-week TOEFL plan should diagnose first, repair weak skills next, then shift to timed practice and final review.
- The current TOEFL iBT tests Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.
- ETS lists approximate base times of 30 minutes Reading, 29 Listening, 23 Writing, and 8 Speaking.
- ETS says to allow approximately two hours for the test, excluding directions, and notes that time and item counts may vary as the test adapts.
- Since January 21, 2026, score reports use a 1 to 6 scale in half-point increments, with four section scores and an overall score.
- ETS's 2026 preparation guidance recommends beginning with a practice test to establish a baseline and identify weaker sections.
Start the 21 days with evidence, not equal study time
Three weeks is long enough to make meaningful preparation decisions, but short enough that unfocused practice becomes expensive. Do not automatically divide every day into four equal blocks. Start by identifying which task types and skills are costing you the most accuracy or control. ETS's current study-plan guidance recommends beginning with a practice test so you can see your baseline and weaker sections before you build the routine.
Use a realistic diagnostic under conditions you can repeat. Record your four section results, then add one sentence for each section describing the main problem you observed. A Reading issue might be missing implied meaning. A Listening issue might be losing speaker purpose. A Speaking issue might be incomplete interview answers. A Writing issue might be weak sentence control. The purpose is not to produce a perfect score prediction. It is to decide where the next seven days should go.

For a more evidence-led starting point, the diagnostic-based study-plan guide shows how to turn results into priorities. Week 1: repair the biggest weakness and learn the current tasks
Use days 1 through 7 to build familiarity and remove one or two high-frequency weaknesses. The current TOEFL uses focused task types across all four skills, so your practice should match those tasks rather than relying on old-format habits. Reading includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. Listening includes response, conversation, announcement, and academic-talk tasks. Writing includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion. Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
A useful Week 1 pattern is one primary weak-skill block, one shorter secondary-skill block, and a review block. For example, a learner whose diagnostic shows weak Listening can spend most focused practice on short current-format Listening tasks, then use a smaller block for Writing sentence control and finish by reviewing why answers were missed. Keep the sessions sustainable. ETS's April 2026 study-plan guidance emphasizes consistency and says shorter, regular sessions are preferable to long, irregular study sessions.
Do not rush into full test simulation every day. ETS's longer preparation model begins with relaxed practice and later shifts toward timed performance. In a compressed 21-day plan, that means Week 1 should still prioritize understanding task demands, correcting repeated mistakes, and building a repeatable review habit.
Week 2: combine weak-skill repair with timed section work
During days 8 through 14, keep repairing the biggest weakness but add more timed work. The goal is to see whether your accuracy survives normal test pressure. Use section-sized or smaller timed sets rather than assuming every practice session must be a full test. The current base times are approximately 30 minutes for Reading, 29 for Listening, 23 for Writing, and 8 for Speaking, although ETS notes that adaptive testing can make actual time and item counts vary.
A simple weekly balance is three focused skill sessions, two timed or partly timed sessions, and two review or lighter days. A review day is not wasted time. It is where you compare errors, find repeated causes, and decide what to repeat. If a mistake disappears under untimed practice but returns under a timer, the problem is not fully repaired yet.
If your schedule is tight, do not compensate by removing review. Reduce the number of new questions instead. Twenty carefully reviewed items can produce a clearer next step than a large volume of practice that you never analyze. Aidoss Academy's one-hour-a-day TOEFL study plan is useful when you need a compact daily structure.
Week 3: shift from learning to performance
Days 15 through 21 should increasingly resemble test performance. ETS's 2026 study guidance moves later preparation toward timed sections, fresh practice tests, time management, and review of remaining weaknesses. In a three-week plan, make that shift during the final week rather than trying to learn large amounts of new material.
| Days | Main purpose | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| 1-7 | Diagnose and repair | Repeated error causes |
| 8-14 | Add timed section work | Accuracy under time pressure |
| 15-18 | Simulate performance | Pacing and recurring misses |
| 19-21 | Refine and reduce load | Stable strengths and last priorities |
Use at least one realistic multi-section or full practice experience before the final days if your available official practice supports it. Then review it. Do not spend the last two or three days chasing every weakness you have ever seen. Choose the errors that are still frequent and consequential, retest them, and protect sleep and routine. Your final sessions should make execution more predictable, not make the plan more complicated.
How to Practice This: use T-G-R to choose tomorrow's work
Use the approved T-G-R diagnosis method: Test, Group, Repair. The most important step for a three-week schedule is Group. After a practice set, do not label every miss as a separate problem. Group misses by cause so the next session targets a pattern.
Worked example: suppose a learner completes a timed Listening set and misses six items. Two misses come from unknown vocabulary, one from a careless click, and three from losing the speaker's purpose. Instead of scheduling generic Listening practice, group the three purpose errors together and make speaker purpose the primary repair target. The next session can use several short Listening clips, with one written note after each clip: “What is the speaker trying to accomplish?”
Measurable action: for the next seven days, record every meaningful miss under one cause label. At the end of each day, choose tomorrow's primary practice target from the largest repeated group. At the end of the week, retest with fresh material and check whether that group's frequency falls. If it does not, keep the target. If it does, move the next largest repeated group to the front.
Keep the plan flexible without making it random
A 21-day schedule should have fixed phases but flexible daily emphasis. If your Reading is already stable and your Speaking responses repeatedly break down, giving both sections identical time is not automatically fair or efficient. Reallocate time according to evidence while continuing enough maintenance practice to keep stronger skills active.
Recheck the plan every three or four days. Ask three questions: Which error group is repeating? Which skill is improving under timed conditions? Which practice block is producing no useful new information? Adjust the next block, not the entire plan. This keeps the schedule responsive without restarting it every time one practice result changes.

Frequently asked questions
Is three weeks enough to prepare for TOEFL?
Three weeks can support a focused preparation cycle, but whether it is enough depends on your starting level, target, and required improvement. Use a diagnostic immediately and prioritize the largest evidence-based weaknesses rather than assuming a fixed amount of progress.
Should I practice all four TOEFL sections every day?
No. Keep all four skills active across the week, but give more time to the weaknesses shown by your diagnostic and review data. Equal daily time can be inefficient when one section is clearly the main bottleneck.
When should timed TOEFL practice start in a three-week plan?
Begin introducing timed work during the second week and make it a larger part of the final week. Early practice should still leave enough room to understand errors and learn the current task types.
What should I do in the final three days?
Reduce new learning and focus on stable execution, a few recurring weaknesses, and normal routine. Review evidence from recent timed work instead of adding large new study targets at the end.
