TOEFL Study Plan for Six Weeks

A six-week TOEFL plan should diagnose first, build weak skills next, add timed practice, then finish with focused review.

At a glance
  • The current TOEFL iBT has Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking sections.
  • ETS lists approximate base times of 30 minutes Reading, 29 Listening, 23 Writing, and 8 Speaking.
  • ETS says to allow about two hours for the test, excluding directions.
  • Because the test adapts, actual item counts and timing can vary.
  • ETS currently provides full-length practice tests and skill-specific lesson plans for preparation.

What a six-week TOEFL plan needs to accomplish

Six weeks is long enough to do more than memorize formats, but short enough that every week needs a job. The first mistake is treating all six weeks as identical practice. A better plan changes purpose over time: diagnose, repair, stabilize, time, simulate, and review.

Start with evidence. Use a diagnostic or a carefully reviewed practice set to identify which section and task types actually cost you the most. The free TOEFL Readiness Check can help you turn that first snapshot into a practical starting point. If you already have practice results, record accuracy, timing, and the reason for each miss rather than keeping only a total score.

The current TOEFL format matters when you build the calendar. Reading is not the only section that needs timed work, and Writing and Speaking should not be postponed until the final week. ETS currently lists 50 Reading items, 47 Listening items, 12 Writing items, and 11 Speaking items as the base structure, while noting that the adaptive test can vary in item count and time. That is why the plan below trains all four skills while giving extra time to your weakest one.

Weeks 1 and 2: diagnose, then repair the biggest weakness

Week 1 is diagnostic week. Complete representative work in all four sections. Do not rush to increase volume. After each session, label mistakes by cause: vocabulary, misunderstanding, missed detail, organization, grammar control, timing, hesitation, or another specific reason you can act on. Your goal by the end of the week is to name one primary weakness and one secondary weakness.

Week 2 is repair week. Spend roughly half of your focused study time on the primary weakness, about a quarter on the secondary weakness, and the rest maintaining the other skills. For example, if Listening academic talks are weak because your notes capture details but miss relationships, practice identifying cause, contrast, sequence, and speaker purpose before adding harder volume.

Do not confuse untimed repair with avoiding pressure. Early untimed work is useful when it lets you see the reasoning process clearly. Once the same error begins to fall, start introducing time limits. Aidoss Academy's guide on tracking TOEFL progress week by week gives you a practical way to judge whether a repair is transferring instead of merely feeling familiar.

Weeks 3 and 4: stabilize accuracy and add timed pressure

Week 3 is stabilization week. Keep targeted repair, but require fresh material. If a Reading strategy only works on passages you have already reviewed, it is not stable yet. If a Speaking structure sounds smooth only after several rehearsals, it is not ready for test pressure. Use fresh questions and compare performance by task type.

Week 4 is timed transition week. Begin combining tasks into section-like blocks. The purpose is not to prove that you can survive a full test every day. It is to discover what changes when a clock is present. Some learners become less accurate late in Reading. Others rush Writing openings and lose organization. Speaking may become shorter or less controlled when preparation time feels tight. Record the pattern instead of simply recording that the session felt difficult.

A six-week plan should also protect recovery. Four or five focused study days can be more useful than seven unfocused days. Use one lighter review session to revisit error logs, vocabulary, or recorded responses. If you want a longer comparison point, the live eight-week TOEFL study plan shows how the same phases can be spread over more time.

Weeks 5 and 6: simulate, review, and reduce uncertainty

Week 5 is simulation week. Complete at least one realistic multi-section or full-length practice experience using current-format materials. ETS currently provides full-length practice tests for familiarization. The value comes from the review afterward: identify where accuracy fell, where time disappeared, and whether the same error types from Weeks 1 and 2 still appear.

Week 6 is consolidation week. Do not use the final days to rebuild every skill from zero. Focus on repeated errors that still survive fresh practice. Keep short exposures to all four sections so task formats remain familiar. Reduce heavy practice near the end if fatigue is making performance less representative. The goal of the last week is a reliable routine, not a dramatic last-minute change.

If your exam is much closer than six weeks, use the 10-day TOEFL study plan instead of compressing every six-week activity into a few exhausting days. Different timelines need different priorities.

How to Practice This: use M-A-P-R after each mock

Use the approved M-A-P-R mock-tracking method after a timed mock or section set. The useful step here is R: Repair. Do not end the review after identifying what went wrong. Convert the largest repeated problem into the next practice assignment.

Worked example

Suppose your Week 5 mock shows six Reading misses. Three came from losing the main relationship in academic passages, two came from vocabulary in context, and one came from rushing near the end. Your Repair assignment is not “do more Reading.” It is two fresh academic-passage sets where you write the paragraph relationship before answering, followed by one timed set to check whether the same error returns. Record the new error count next to the mock result.

Measurable action: after every timed mock in Weeks 4 through 6, name the single most frequent error cause, schedule one targeted repair session within 48 hours, then test that same skill on fresh material. A repair is useful only when the repeated error decreases or becomes more specific.

Keep the six-week plan simple enough to follow

A good plan fits on one page. For each week, write one main purpose, two priority task types, one timed checkpoint, and one review block. Avoid assigning every resource you own. The calendar should tell you what evidence you need next. If you cannot explain why a session is scheduled, remove or replace it.

This also makes missed days easier to handle. Do not double the next day's workload automatically. Preserve the sequence of diagnosis, repair, fresh practice, timed check, and review. Move the least important maintenance session first. Six weeks works because the phases connect, not because every calendar box is filled.

FAQs

Is six weeks enough to prepare for the TOEFL?

Six weeks can be a useful preparation window when your plan is based on a diagnostic and your target is realistic for your starting point. The amount of improvement possible varies by learner, so use weekly evidence rather than assuming the calendar itself produces a particular score.

How many hours a day should I study for six weeks?

Use a workload you can repeat consistently and adjust it to your diagnostic. A learner with one narrow weakness may need less total time than someone rebuilding several skills. Measure completed focused work and reviewed errors rather than chasing a universal daily-hour number.

When should I start full-length TOEFL practice tests?

Use early practice to establish a baseline, then make realistic simulation more important in the later weeks. In this plan, Week 5 is the main simulation phase, while Weeks 3 and 4 introduce fresh and timed work so the transition is not abrupt.

Should I study all four TOEFL sections every week?

Yes, maintain contact with all four sections while giving extra time to the weakest areas. This prevents a narrow repair plan from allowing stronger skills or task familiarity to fade before test day.
