TOEFL Section Minimums for South Korea Graduate Applicants

A South Korea graduate applicant should record the program’s overall TOEFL rule and every section floor separately, then route practice to the requirement that the current evidence does not yet meet.

South Korea facts and checks for this decision

  • No ETS pass score: The recipient decides what score it requires.
  • Current score scale: TOEFL uses 1 to 6 section and overall scores in half-band steps, with a comparable 0 to 120 score during the transition.
  • Several rule owners: Admission, department funding, teaching duties, or a scholarship can apply separate English rules.
  • Wording controls: Minimum, recommended, competitive, and exemption describe different decisions.

ETS does not set a universal passing TOEFL score. Universities, departments, assistantship offices, licensing bodies, and scholarship programs can set different rules. A graduate-school page may state an overall minimum, a section minimum, a recommended score, or an exemption. Those terms are not interchangeable.

Since January 21, 2026, TOEFL reports section scores and the overall score on a 1 to 6 scale in half-band steps. During a two-year transition, reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 score. Use the scale and wording on the current recipient page, and ask for written clarification when a program page has not caught up.

Create a requirement card for each graduate program

Korean applicants often compare several overseas programs while also handling transcripts, references, research statements, and funding. One score target copied across every row can hide a section floor or a later departmental rule. Give each program its own card.

No ETS pass score

Do not copy a broad “good score” into a Korean graduate application. Check the exact university, school, department, degree, intake, and applicant category.

Current score scale

The overall 1 to 6 score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. A comparable total does not erase a stated section floor.

Several rule owners

A South Korea applicant seeking a teaching assistantship should not assume the admission minimum also satisfies an oral-English or funding condition. Verify each owner.

Wording controls

Record the exact word and a dated source. If a page mixes old and new score scales, ask how the current TOEFL report will be read.

Read each number with its rule and owner

Do not compare totals alone. Attach each score to the decision it controls and the date on which the page was checked.

Route or check Useful when Limit to verify
Overall minimum A threshold for the application or admission review. May not satisfy a separate section or funding rule.
Section floor A minimum in Reading, Listening, Speaking, or Writing. A high total cannot be assumed to compensate for a missed floor.
Recommended score Context about preparation or competitiveness when clearly stated. Must not be rewritten as a promise or a formal minimum.
Exemption A route for applicants who meet the stated education or language condition. Definitions, documents, and eligible countries or institutions can vary.

The safest target meets the named overall rule and each named floor. It still does not predict admission, because graduate decisions use other evidence.

Use T-G-R as a four-section score map

Aidoss Academy uses T-G-R: Target, Gap, and Route. Target contains the recipient’s exact overall and section rules. Gap compares each rule with current timed evidence. Route assigns practice and feedback to the largest required gap.

One step to use now

Create five rows: overall, Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Add the current rule, current evidence, confidence in that evidence, and next test. Mark any missing official rule as Unknown rather than zero.

If a program states an overall minimum and a separate Speaking floor, a learner with strong Reading evidence should maintain Reading in shorter blocks and protect more recorded Speaking practice. The route follows the unmet rule, not pride in the strongest section.

Update the map after a matched timed set, not after one easy drill. Recheck the recipient page before registration and before the application is submitted.

A practical South Korea action plan

Use the plan as a sequence, not a list of resources. Finish one check before adding the next item, and keep official rules separate from study advice.

  1. Open the current official page for each graduate program and intake.
  2. Record overall, section, recommendation, exemption, and score-validity wording separately.
  3. Check whether a department, assistantship, or scholarship adds another rule.
  4. Map current-format evidence to every required section.
  5. Route weekly practice and feedback to the largest required gap.
  6. Save dated evidence and ask the program to resolve unclear or mixed-scale wording.

A Korean applicant working in a lab or company should protect feedback blocks for Speaking and Writing before recommendation and statement deadlines crowd the calendar. Keep application drafting and TOEFL practice in separate tasks so neither disappears inside the other.

Put each date, source, and decision in one sheet. That small record matters in South Korea because academy schedules, test appointments, school calendars, and recipient rules do not update on the same day. A dated note prevents an old screenshot or remembered rule from controlling a current application.

Why a total-only plan can fail

A total can hide an uneven profile. A learner may improve the average through a strong section while a required floor remains unmet. The plan should display floors beside the evidence instead of hoping the total will compensate.

Do not publish or repeat a university number unless it has been checked for the exact program and intake. A third-party list can help discovery, but the current recipient owns the rule.

  • Choosing a test or course before checking the exact recipient and purpose.
  • Using an old Korean blog post or saved academy page as if it were a current official rule.
  • Counting passive review as productive TOEFL Speaking or Writing practice.
  • Changing several parts of the plan at once, which hides the cause of an error.

Run a dated South Korea verification drill

Before acting, open the current source in Korea Standard Time and build a four-line evidence note. Give each line an access date, the page or account screen used, the exact decision it controls, and the next date for a recheck. This matters when a Korean academy page, university notice, saved screenshot, or test booking screen was published on a different schedule from the official TOEFL rule.

  • No ETS pass score: Test this working claim: The recipient decides what score it requires. Record the current source and who owns the rule. If a live official page, recipient reply, or booking screen differs, replace the old note instead of blending both versions.
  • Current score scale: Test this working claim: TOEFL uses 1 to 6 section and overall scores in half-band steps, with a comparable 0 to 120 score during the transition. Record the current source and who owns the rule. If a live official page, recipient reply, or booking screen differs, replace the old note instead of blending both versions.
  • Several rule owners: Test this working claim: Admission, department funding, teaching duties, or a scholarship can apply separate English rules. Record the current source and who owns the rule. If a live official page, recipient reply, or booking screen differs, replace the old note instead of blending both versions.
  • Wording controls: Test this working claim: Minimum, recommended, competitive, and exemption describe different decisions. Record the current source and who owns the rule. If a live official page, recipient reply, or booking screen differs, replace the old note instead of blending both versions.

Finish by asking what would change the plan. A new recipient minimum may change the target. A different Korean appointment may change travel. An updated ID rule may change the document check. A changed course schedule may change access to feedback. Keep those branches separate. The drill does not make a source permanent; it makes the learner able to see which fact supports each decision and when that fact needs another check.

Frequently asked questions

Can a high TOEFL total make up for a low section?

Only if the recipient’s current rule allows it. Never assume compensation when a section floor is stated.

What if a graduate page still shows 0 to 120?

Save the current page and ask how the program reads the current score report. ETS also shows a comparable 0 to 120 score during the transition.

Is the admission minimum enough for an assistantship?

Not always. Check the department, funding, teaching, and scholarship rules as separate owners.
