Set a TOEFL Target for US, Canadian, UK, and European Applications
A country does not set one TOEFL target. Build the target from every program's current overall rule, section floor, test mode, score age, and deadline.
An Indian applicant may apply to a US master's program, a Canadian graduate school, a UK degree, and a European exchange in one cycle. A broad target such as good TOEFL score can hide a speaking floor, a test-mode restriction, an older score table, or a separate teaching-role rule.
ETS states that it does not set a passing or failing score. Each recipient decides. The safe target is therefore the highest binding rule across the active shortlist, plus a planning margin chosen by the applicant. That margin is not an admission promise and should not replace the exact minimum.
Facts to check before acting
- ETS reports current section and overall results on the 1 to 6 scale in half-band steps.
- During the stated transition, ETS also provides a comparable 0 to 120 overall result.
- Institutions can set overall, section, single-sitting, test-mode, score-age, and deadline rules.
- Admission, visa, scholarship, and teaching-role English rules can belong to different authorities.

The India-specific checks
| India factor | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Multi-country shortlist | Indian applicants often compare several destinations. Keep one evidence row per program rather than using a country-level coaching chart. |
| Old score tables | Some application pages may still show 0 to 120 language during the transition. Do not perform a manual conversion when the institution gives its own current instruction. |
| Funding and roles | A graduate admission minimum may differ from a teaching-assistant or scholarship condition. Meeting a TOEFL rule never secures funding, work, or admission. |
Build the shortlist before the target
Create one row for each program and intake. Link the exact official page. Record the test accepted, overall minimum, section floors, test-date or score-age rule, accepted test mode, MyBest or single-sitting policy where stated, and deadline. Leave a field blank if the page does not say.
Do not use an aggregator as final evidence. A university-wide page can also differ from a graduate school or department page. When two official pages conflict, ask the program in writing and save the reply with the date.
Separate minimum, competitive context, and personal aim
The published minimum is an eligibility rule. A program may describe a recommended result or broader competitive context, but neither becomes an admission equation. Record the words the institution uses. Do not turn a recommendation into a guaranteed cutoff or a minimum into a predicted admit.
Set the personal aim after the binding rows are clear. The applicant may choose a margin to reduce the risk of landing exactly at a floor, especially when section minima matter. That choice should reflect current practice evidence and time, not a promise from a coach.
Handle the 2026 score language carefully
The current TOEFL score report uses four section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale. ETS calculates the overall result from the section scores and rounds to the nearest half band under its published rule. ETS also states that a comparable 0 to 120 overall score appears during the transition period.
A university may update its page at a different time. Follow the institution's own direction and the score report. Do not use a general online table to invent a section conversion or to claim that one old number always equals one new band for admissions.
Add application timing from India
Work back from the earliest deadline across time zones. Include the official score-availability guidance, recipient delivery and processing, possible technical or review delay, and a retest only if the calendar permits it. Do not schedule around the normal case alone.
Indian semester exams, work projects, passport or ID issues, travel, and test-centre availability can reduce the buffer. Record these constraints in the same sheet. A target without a workable test date remains only a number.
Use a target ladder, not one magic number
Build three levels: Binding floor, Personal aim, Review trigger. The binding floor comes only from official program rules. The personal aim adds a modest learner-chosen margin where useful. The review trigger names a section practice pattern that requires more work or feedback before test day.
For example, if several programs publish a Speaking floor, the review trigger might be repeated incomplete Take an Interview answers. The action is a speaking drill or feedback, not a claim that a practice result predicts admission.
A practical next-step plan
- List every program and intake with the direct current admissions link.
- Record overall, section, test-mode, score-age, and deadline fields using the institution's words.
- Separate admission from visa, scholarship, licensing, and teaching-role authorities.
- Use the current ETS score report language and avoid manual admission conversions.
- Set a personal aim only after identifying the highest binding floor.
- Work back from the earliest deadline with an India-specific test and delivery buffer.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good TOEFL score for Indian students?
A useful result meets every active program's current overall and section rules. ETS does not set a universal passing score, and no country has one target for all universities.
Can an old 0 to 120 minimum still appear?
Yes, institutions may update at different times during the transition. Follow the exact program page and score report, and ask admissions when the published rule is unclear.
Does meeting the minimum secure admission?
No. A minimum usually marks eligibility for the English requirement. Admission depends on the program's full process, and score outcomes do not secure funding or visas.
Should an applicant aim above every minimum?
A personal margin can reduce the risk of landing on a floor, but it is a planning choice, not a requirement or guarantee. Balance it against time and other application work.
