How to Read a TOEFL Score Report in 2026

Read the 1–6 section scores first, check the overall average and CEFR level, then compare MyBest and university requirements.

At a Glance

  • Tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 use 1–6 section scores in 0.5-point increments.
  • The overall score is the average of Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band.
  • Through the transition period, reports also show a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale and a CEFR level.
  • Your report includes scores from the selected test date and MyBest scores based on your highest valid section scores.
  • TOEFL scores remain valid for 2 years from the test date.

Start with the four 1–6 section scores

The clearest way to read a 2026 TOEFL score report is to begin with the four section scores, not the overall number. Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing are each reported on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments. These section scores show where the result is balanced and where one skill may limit an application.

A total score can hide an uneven profile. For example, Reading 5.0, Listening 5.0, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.5 produce an average of 4.5. The overall result may satisfy a program that asks only for 4.5, but it may not satisfy a separate Speaking minimum. Always compare each section with the university's published rules.

The section scores also tell you what to practice next. A lower Speaking score does not mean the whole preparation plan should restart. It means the next study cycle should route more timed practice, review, and retesting toward Speaking while maintaining the stronger sections.

The Aidoss Academy TOEFL readiness check can help you interpret whether the weakest section reflects one task type, timing, or a broader language gap.

Check how ETS calculated the overall score

ETS calculates the overall 1–6 score by averaging the four section scores and rounding the result to the nearest half band. This is different from the former system, where the total was the sum of four 0–30 section scores.

Section Example score What it suggests
Reading 4.5 B2-level reading performance
Listening 4.0 B2-level listening performance
Speaking 3.5 B1-level speaking performance
Writing 4.5 B2-level writing performance
Average 4.125 → 4.0 overall Rounded to the nearest half band

In this example, the overall score is 4.0 after rounding. The result is not the same as having four 4.0 section scores. One profile is uneven, while the other is balanced. Universities may treat those profiles differently if they publish section minimums.

Use the average to confirm the overall number, but use the individual sections to make decisions. The overall score answers, “What is the combined result?” The section scores answer, “Where is the risk?”

Read the CEFR level and comparable 0–120 score correctly

During the 2026–2028 transition, TOEFL score reports show the CEFR level, 1–6 overall and section scores, and a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale. The comparable old-scale number helps students and institutions that still use earlier admissions wording.

The comparable 0–120 score is not a second test result. It is a transition reference linked to the 1–6 result. Use it when a university still states a requirement such as 80, 90, or 100, but confirm whether the institution has added its own 1–6 requirement.

CEFR gives a broad proficiency interpretation. On the current scale, scores of 4.0 and 4.5 align with B2, 5.0 and 5.5 align with C1, and 6.0 aligns with C2. The CEFR label helps interpret general language level, but admissions decisions still depend on the university's own total and section requirements.

Compare test-date scores with MyBest scores

Your score report includes the total and section scores from one test date and MyBest scores. ETS describes MyBest as the highest section scores from all valid test dates, combined into a superscore. This can produce a stronger section profile than any one test date.

Read the two results separately. The selected test-date score shows what happened in one complete sitting. MyBest shows the best valid section performance across sittings. A university may accept MyBest, reject it, or apply special conditions, so check the institution directly.

For a report on the updated 1–6 scale, ETS converts older valid section scores into the current scale for the MyBest section. For a report on the prior 0–120 scale, MyBest includes only scores from the prior scale. The report itself handles this presentation, so students should not create an unofficial superscore.

A practical application check has three steps: identify which score type the university accepts, compare the required overall score, and then compare every section floor. Do not assume that a higher MyBest total automatically solves a low section score if the program evaluates a particular test date.

Use the enhanced feedback for your next study decision

ETS says additional information in the account can include a proficiency level for each section, feedback on Reading and Listening question types, and closer analysis of Speaking and Writing language use, grammar, and mechanics. This feedback is useful only when it changes the next practice decision.

Translate the report into one target and one gap. The target comes from the university requirement. The gap is the difference between that target and the current section profile. Avoid treating every section equally when only one or two sections are below the requirement.

Scores remain valid for two years from the test date. Record the expiration date before building an application timeline. A valid score that expires before a university's required submission point may need to be replaced, even when the score itself is high enough.

The guide to choosing a good TOEFL score explains how to connect a score report with a real admissions target instead of judging the number in isolation.

How to Practice This

Aidoss Academy uses T-G-R: Target, Gap, Route. Target means writing the exact overall and section requirements for the intended program. Gap means comparing those requirements with the score report, section by section. Route means assigning the next four weeks of practice to the largest admissions risk first.

Worked example: A program requires 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. The report shows Reading 5.0, Listening 4.5, Speaking 3.5, and Writing 4.5. The average is 4.375, which rounds to 4.5, so the total requirement is met. Speaking is still 0.5 below the section floor. The route should prioritize timed Speaking responses, review, and retesting while maintaining the other sections.

FAQ

What information is on a TOEFL score report?

It includes the selected test-date section and overall scores plus MyBest scores. During the transition, reports also show CEFR information and a comparable 0–120 overall score.

How is the TOEFL overall score calculated in 2026?

ETS averages the four 1–6 section scores and rounds the result to the nearest half band. A 5.25 average becomes 5.5, while a 5.125 average becomes 5.0.

Do universities see MyBest scores?

ETS says institutions see test-day section and total scores as well as MyBest scores. Each institution decides whether MyBest is accepted for admission.

How long is a TOEFL score valid?

A TOEFL score is valid for 2 years from the test date. ETS will not report or send it after that period.
