Use F-L-I-P to Review TOEFL Vocabulary Errors

F-L-I-P turns a vocabulary mistake into a corrected phrase, original sentence, and spaced-review card you can retrieve later.

At a glance

  • The current TOEFL iBT measures Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
  • Current tasks use academic and practical language, so knowing a definition is not always enough for accurate use.
  • F-L-I-P means Find, Link, Invent, and Place.
  • The method is designed for vocabulary errors such as wrong meaning, unnatural collocation, wrong word form, or slow retrieval.
  • The Place step uses a five-box Leitner cycle so weak cards return sooner than stable cards.

What F-L-I-P Is Designed to Fix

A vocabulary mistake is rarely solved by copying the correct word once. The learner may understand the dictionary meaning but still choose the wrong word in context, attach an unnatural partner, use the wrong grammatical form, or fail to retrieve the word under time pressure. Each failure needs a different correction.

F-L-I-P is a narrow review method for those vocabulary problems. It does not replace a complete review of Reading logic, Listening notes, Speaking delivery, or Writing organization. Use the broader TOEFL error-log guide to classify the original miss, then use F-L-I-P when the evidence points to vocabulary.

This distinction matters because the current TOEFL includes several task families across four sections. A weak answer may involve language knowledge, task control, timing, or more than one cause. Review should begin with the smallest supported diagnosis rather than the broad conclusion that vocabulary is always the problem.

How to Decide Whether an Error Belongs in F-L-I-P

Before creating a card, replay the mistake and ask what would have changed the answer. Put it into F-L-I-P when a more accurate contextual meaning, a natural word partner, a correct word form, or faster retrieval would have prevented the miss. Examples include choosing economic when the sentence requires economical, writing make research instead of conduct research, or recognizing mitigate but being unable to use it.

Do not create a vocabulary card when the main failure was different. A Reading answer based on the wrong paragraph may require evidence-location practice. A Listening miss caused by recording every detail may require note selection. A Speaking response that stops before an example may require response development. A Writing answer with unclear purpose may require task planning. Labeling every miss as vocabulary hides the real pattern.

A useful test is to write one sentence beginning, “This answer would have been correct if I had known or retrieved...” If the sentence ends with a word meaning, phrase, form, or production pattern, F-L-I-P is appropriate. If it ends with “where to look,” “what the speaker meant,” “how to organize the response,” or “how much time remained,” keep the item in the main error log and choose a matched drill instead.

For a wider evidence-based review process, use the practice-test review guide before selecting the correction method. You can also use the free TOEFL readiness check when the problem is a broad study priority rather than one vocabulary item.

The Four F-L-I-P Steps

F: Find the meaning in context. Return to the sentence, recording, prompt, or answer where the mistake appeared. Write the meaning required there, not every definition in a dictionary. Note the clue that proves the meaning, such as a contrast word, cause-and-effect relationship, example, or grammatical slot.

L: Link the natural phrase. Add one useful partner or pattern. A learner who records only conduct = carry out may still write an unnatural phrase. Recording conduct research and conduct an experiment teaches how the word behaves.

I: Invent an original sentence. Create a new sentence that does not copy the source. The new sentence tests whether the word, phrase, grammar, and meaning can move into another context. Keep it short enough to review quickly but complete enough to expose a mistake.

P: Place the card into spaced review. Put the corrected item into a five-box Leitner cycle. Review Box 1 most often and move a card forward only after correct retrieval of the meaning, phrase, and a fresh sentence. Send it back when any required part fails.

How to Build the Five-Box Review Cycle

Box Suggested review Move rule
1 Every study day Move after one complete retrieval
2 Every second study day Move after another complete retrieval
3 Twice a week Move when the phrase and sentence remain accurate
4 Once a week Move after successful use in a short response
5 Every two weeks Keep active; return to Box 1 after a failure

These intervals are a practical study routine, not an ETS rule. Adjust them to your calendar, but preserve the principle: difficult items return sooner, and successful items must still reappear after a delay. The TOEFL tools and practice systems guide can help you place this cycle inside a larger weekly routine.

How to Practice This: Repair One Real Error

Suppose a learner writes, “The new policy will decrease the danger for students walking at night.” The meaning is understandable, but the learner wants a more precise academic phrase and later fails to retrieve it.

Find: The required meaning is “make a harmful possibility less severe.” The surrounding sentence is about safety risk.

Link: Record mitigate a risk and mitigate the effects. Do not add a long list of unrelated phrases.

Invent: “The university extended evening bus service to mitigate the safety risks of late laboratory sessions.” This sentence uses a new setting and preserves the natural phrase.

Place: Put the card in Box 1. On the next review, hide the answer and require three outputs: the contextual meaning, the phrase mitigate a risk, and a different original sentence.

Measurable action: Repair five vocabulary errors today. After 24 hours, score one point each for correct meaning, natural phrase, and original sentence. Keep any card below three points in Box 1.

The review is successful only when the corrected language can be retrieved without seeing the model. Recognition is useful, but the final check is production. After the card reaches Box 4, use the target word in a timed paragraph or spoken answer so the review connects with actual task performance.

Common Review Mistakes

Copying a definition without the original context: This removes the evidence that made one meaning correct. Save a short source sentence or a compact description of the clue.

Adding too many phrases: A crowded card becomes difficult to retrieve. Begin with one high-value phrase and expand only after it is stable.

Moving a card after recognition: Seeing the answer and thinking “I knew that” is not a successful test. Require an answer before turning the card over.

Reviewing cards without using them: Box movement should eventually require a new sentence or short response. Otherwise the system may improve recognition without improving usable language.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can F-L-I-P review grammar errors?

F-L-I-P is primarily a vocabulary method. It can record a word-form or phrase-pattern problem, but a sentence-structure error needs a grammar-focused repair method.

How many cards should I repair at once?

Begin with five to ten cards. A small set makes retrieval measurable and prevents the review queue from becoming larger than the practice itself.

Should I translate the word?

A brief translation can support understanding, but it should not replace the English contextual meaning, natural phrase, and original sentence.

When should a card leave active review?

Keep the card active until you can retrieve the meaning, phrase, and a fresh sentence after a meaningful delay. Even a stable card should return occasionally for maintenance.
